Nothing big, but at least the Eagles didn't have anything go wrong

2015 National Signing Day is in the books, and it was a day that pretty much went as expected. Boston College brought in 25 recruits, and one graduate student today. There were no last minute flips either to or from the Eagles, and for the most part the news of the day was wrapped up with Ray Smith's 7am PST Letter of Intent fax.

The class attacked weaknesses that needed to be addressed. They grabbed two quarterbacks, a handful of WR's and WR/CB athletes, and added much needed depth to both the offensive and defensive line. Even with it being a large class, the Eagles didn't use many spots on running backs, which probably prevented them from getting an elite recruit (probably a position BC has the highest chances of grabbing a 4/5 star). Also, they did not grab a kicker on scholarship, but Addazio did grab one as a preferred walk on.

Steve Addazio talked today about how impressed he was with the speed of his new recruits, many of them with sub 4.5's on their 40s. Some of the faster players that committed today include a track star Taj-Amir Torres, the two mobile QB's Elijah Robinson and Jeff Smith, and Zach Allen, a very quick defensive end. That certainly will be important for the Eagles as they will need to continue to improve at many of the skill positions on offense and defense.

Looking at the crew as a whole still leaves you with some questions. While no doubt this group is talented, and all but three are 3 stars, there doesn't seem to be any elite talent in the group. There were no four stars, though both Anthony Palazzolo and Wyatt Knopfke were both at one time 4*'s, but the recruiting services fixed that after they committed to the Eagles. On the other hand, BC recruits bring in some pretty amazing credentials. Nolan Borgersen broke New Jersey's receiving records, Jeff Smith had 3,000 yards his senior season (pass/rush), and Zach Allen was the Gatorade Player Of The Year for Connecticut.

In terms of geography, Addazio continued to hit on the important areas that he has always treasured. He had seven recruits from Massachusetts, and four from Connecticut. He received two more commitments from New York and New Jersey, and a whopping six from Florida. It'll be interesting to see how BC attacks the recruiting trail this year as they have sent out multiple offers in Texas and California, two areas where we haven't received much love in recent years.

We are starting to see what this program is going to look like under third year head coach Steve Addazio. 56 of the 85 players on the roster have come from his last two years of recruiting. The Spaz years and players are starting to fade away, and now it's up to Addazio to find more talent to continue to rebuild this program. Today's recruiting class was a solid group, but it's no time to rest—the Class of 2016 awaits.

A speedy defensive tackle from California.

The Eagles had to go all the way to the left coast to unearth a defensive tackle in this class. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, California) defensive tackle Ray Smith is a dude. The 6-foot-1, 270-pound tackle selected Boston College over claimed offers from Air Force, Bucknell, Harvard, Lafayette, Navy and San Diego State.

Smith has a combination of the two things you would look for in a defensive tackle. He has speed to beat offensive lineman off the snap, and good strength to get past them when needed. He isn't necessarily the size of a standard college defensive tackle yet, but with a little training and weight gain he could fit in well in Don Brown's defensive schemes.

With Connor Wujciak and Truman Gutapfel coming back to fill in at defensive tackle, there won't be a lot of playing time. The interesting question will be whether Mehdi Abdesmad will be granted an additional year. He played in four games last year, but there is the possibility that the NCAA could grant him another year. If that happens I wouldn't expect Smith to be on the two deep this year, and instead would be redshirted.

Here are Smith's highlights via Hudl:

A three-year starter with the Spiders is an Eagle!

Just one surprise on National Letter of Intent Signing Day for Boston College and it'll hopefully add some much needed depth to BC's defensive line. In addition to the 25 high school recruits added to this year's class, the program has picked up Richmond graduate transfer Evan Kelly.

Kelly, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound defensive lineman from Seton LaSalle Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, was a three-year starter for the Spiders. He registered 162 career tackles in 42 games, including 23 TFLs and 17 sacks. Last season, he started in all 12 games on his way to being named an All-CAA first-team selection. He was named to the All-CAA Second Team in both 2012 and 2013. Out of high school, Kelly was named all-conference as a junior and senior on both sides of the ball.

Given that BC is well under the 85 football scholarship cap at the moment, this is the type of low risk, potentially high reward pickup that Addazio has utilized in each of his first three years on the Heights. Kelly's scholarship will only be on the books for a single year, but he adds a much needed big body on the Eagles' defensive line.

This will be the second straight year that Addazio and Brown have dipped into the FCS grad transfer pool for a defensive end. Last season, Columbia's Seyi Adebayo saw action in all 12 games for BC, recording 12 sacks, 4 TFLs and 3 sacks, two in the regular season finale against Syracuse.

Welcome to the Heights, Evan!

A huge local kid who looks like what you'd expect from a BC tackle.

Fairfield Prep offensive tackle Anthony Palazzolo would set the tone early for Boston College in 2015, becoming the class's first commit back in December 2013—one of FIVE offensive lineman in this year's recruiting class. BC was in early on the third best Connecticut recruit in the class per Rivals, and Palazzolo commits to the Eagles over claimed offers from Connecticut and Pittsburgh. The 6-foot-5, 330-pounder also drew interest from Maryland, Miami, Nebraska, Penn State, and Syracuse, among others.

Connecticut is not always known as a breeding ground of a lot of talent, but there have certainly been some big names that have come out of there in the past few years. Palazzolo is certainly the type of offensive tackle that Boston College wants and needs. He is HUGE for a high school student, already clocking in at 330 pounds, which makes him ready for college play.

Offensive linemen usually don't start in college for a number of reasons. One is size; many of the kids that come up need to bulk up, since college linemen are usually much bigger than opponents that they've faced in high school. Palazzolo won't be affected by that, since he's already the size of almost everyone who started on the BC line in 2014. However, he is coming in the fall, and given Addazio's track record that would mean that he is going to probably redshirt this year—learning the complex blocking schemes that his offense demands takes some time.

Here are Palazzolo's highlights via Hudl:

A much sought-after WR is coming to the Heights!

Mehdi El Attrach, a wide receiver has faxed his letter of intent and will be heading to the Heights. El Attrach, BC's 16th verbal commitment of the 2015 class and second wide receiving commit, is one of six recruits residing in the state of Florida.

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver out of Lake Nona, he runs a 4.75 40-yard dash and comes to BC over claimed offers from Bowling Green, Duke, East Carolina, Florida International, Louisville, UMass, Memphis, Northwestern, Rutgers, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Western Kentucky, and Western Michigan.

Wide receiving is definitely an area of need for the Eagles, and with such a run-centric offense making it difficult to attract elite talent at the position, El Attrach is a nice addition to this year's class as he clearly racked up a pretty substantial offer sheet. He's a decent sized target with good hands and good speed. With plenty of question marks in the receiving corps moving forward, El Attrach might just find his way onto the two-deep sooner rather than later.

Here are El Attrach's highlights from both HUDL:
