No one is calling for Steve Donahue to be fired, but Bryant? Really?

Brian: Boston College basketball coach Steve Donahue should have a fruit basket sent to A.D. Brad Bates on Monday morning. That's because Sunday's news overshadowed a mind numbingly bad home loss to Bryant earlier in the afternoon.

This wasn't your run-of-the-mill WTF loss for the Eagles hoops team. This was one of the worst losses in recent program history.

Bryant was a Division II program just a few years ago. This same roster of players handled Bryant fairly easily just last season, winning by 20 points. Sure, Lonnie Jackson hit seven 3-pointers last year to sink Bryant, but the roster of guys has largely remained unchanged year over year. The team lost Matt Humphrey, Gabe Moton and Jordan Daniels from last year's squad, but Olivier Hanlan and Joe Rahon have proven capable replacements.

Fans of the program are left scratching their heads after this latest set back. How could a program that beat Bryant by 20 points a season ago drop a game the following year with more or less the same core group of players? If that's not regression, I'm not sure what is.

Obviously the Donahue rebuilding effort will take time and no one is calling for him to be fired now. But I'm not sure you can chalk this loss up to growing pains. An early season loss to Bryant doesn't seem much different than the early season losses to Rhode Island or Holy Cross a year ago. We are less than 48 hours removed from Bates firing Spaz. How much heat should Donahue take for the loss to Bryant?

Jeff: In the end, Donahue should take just as much heat as if the Spaz firing had not been announced, but that announcement certainly did deflect a lot of attention away from his squad's atrocious loss Sunday. This loss will cost at least hundreds and probably a few thousand tickets sold this season. It also almost guarantees that Conte will only have full crowds for North Carolina and Duke.

The first two games of this season the team looked like they might score some points this year and upset a few teams in the ACC. But now sitting at 2-4 on the season without having played a difficult schedule, it's a tough sell to get people in the seats which certainly won't help recruiting.

The Eagles started out 0-10 from three against Bryant. That is exactly the type of stat you would expect to hear when an ACC team gets knocked off by a team like Bryant who is unlikely to win double digit games this year and they play in the NEC. Ryan Anderson played yesterday but is clearly not 100 percent yet with his injured ankle but the Eagles still should have had no problem beating Bryant in the end.

The Eagles took the lead several times in the second half despite a poor shooting effort in the first half but then they continued to pass the ball around the perimeter, miss shots and let Bryant get wide open looks on the other end which they nailed. The ESPN3 announcers made you even more frustrated if you watched the game because they harped on the fact that BC had a huge size advantage and would not get the ball inside on every possession. Had they worked the ball inside more, multiple Bryant players would have fouled out instead of just one. If that happened, BC would most likely be talking about how they beat Bryant on Sunday instead of picking up their fourth loss of the early season.

I think Spaz's loss at Army this season was the worst of his career. This better end up being Donahue's worst. It certainly will be this season, as Bryant figures to be the lowest rated RPI team we will face all year. The closest Bryant had come to beating an ACC team in the past was a 16 point loss. Wherever Bryant is located, I bet there were some celebrations when the team got back on Sunday night.

Boston College hoops just suffered a 56-54 loss to Bryant, arguably the worst loss in recent program history.

While we waited for Bates to drop the hammer on Frank Spaziani, the Boston College men's basketball team was in action this afternoon hosting the NEC's Bryant Bulldogs. It's a good thing that everyone was hitting Refresh on the Boston College Athletics home page, that the game was an ESPN3 exclusive and that no one was paying attention. That's because the Eagles just lost to Bryant, 56-54, for the first time in program history. Bryant has been a Division I basketball team for five seasons.

Boston College's all-freshman backcourt paced the Eagles. Olivier Hanlan finished with a team-high 19 points and Joe Rahon added 11.

Despite going on a 16-5 run early in the second half, the Eagles couldn't put away the Bulldogs. A Ryan Anderson desperation shot rolled off the rim as time expired, giving Bryant their first ever win over Boston College (1-4).

Not much went right in this one, and Boston College hoops is left with one of the most disappointing losses in recent program history. Yes, this loss is way worse than the losses to Maine, Robert Morris or any of the last four against Harvard. Bates might want to get on that whole #FireSpaz thing right away to divert attention away from this brutal loss.

BC snuck past Auburn with a one-point victory last week. Sunday afternoon, they face an opponent that should be relatively easy to beat.

The Boston College Eagles could really use a big win. After three consecutive losses at the Charleston Classic and a narrow one-point victory against the Auburn Tigers, BC needs a confidence booster. It's nice to have pulled out a close game, but nothing would feel better than a nice blowout victory at home today.

Who? Boston College Eagles (2-3) vs. Bryant Bulldogs (2-2)

When? 2:00 PM Eastern

Where? Conte Forum -- Chestnut Hill, MA

Where on my eyeballs? Just go to the game or ESPN3.com

This game was scheduled as a game that BC should win easily. It's a local-ish team and Bryant already lost to Providence. Every sign points to BC coming away with a relaxing win at home. However, there are no guarantees with these Eagles. Steve Donahue's team is so young and so inconsistent that literally nothing would surprise me today.

The biggest key to this game (and every game, really) is Ryan Anderson. After two dominating performances to start the season, Anderson slowed down significantly in his third game before missing the Eagles' fourth game of the season with an ankle injury. He came back from that injury against Auburn but was a complete non-factor, scoring just 3 points and playing only 19 minutes due to constant foul trouble. Any complete performance by the Eagles will necessarily involve Ryan Anderson. If their best player can get it going today, everything else should fall into place.

Olivier Hanlan is quietly emerging as the Eagles' second most important player. He forces the issue by attacking the basket and drawing fouls. And yet he has the ability to knock down threes to keep the defense honest. If Anderson can score in the paint and Hanlan can penetrate at will, BC should have a good day. As we make our way through the out of conference schedule, that's what we should be looking for -- trends. Look for what lineups seem to work and what lineups seem to stall. You'll start to notice things that stand out as obvious keys for BC.

We're yet to see Dennis Clifford record a double-double or really impact a game significantly on the offensive end. Considering the fact that he's 7-feet tall, you'd think he would have an advantage against most college post players. It doesn't appear as though Bryant as any players that play real minutes over 6-foot-8. This should be a point of emphasis for BC. Take advantage of that mismatch.

Per usual, BC will have its hands full on the defensive end. Dyami Starks scored 25 points in Bryant's last game against Brown and is averaging 15.5 points per game on the season. A quick, senior guard will cause problems for this defense -- again. The key is to stop penetration and to not over-help once the ballhandler gets into the paint. Collapsing too much leaves shooters wide open.

Speaking of shooters, what's the deal with Lonnie Jackson? It'd be nice if he could hit a shot today. Lonnie shot 40% from three a year ago but is at just 23.5% this year. You figure that the shots have to start falling sooner or later.

BC Interruption's Prediction:

I should be more confident than I am. But I still think BC gets their stuff together and puts together a complete game. Eagles win 71-58.
