Eagles show fight in final minutes but cannot complete the comeback

BC had a chance to steal an ACC road win this afternoon after a strong first half performance that put them in good position. However, the second half dropoff in shooting and rebounding was just too much for the Eagles to overcome, even with some final minute heroics.

The Eagles struggled early in the first half against an aggressive Cardinal defense. The Cardinals did a good job of keeping BC uncomfortable, forcing turnovers and keeping the Eagles out of the paint. BC put up five 3-point attempts in the first five minutes, sinking only one. They adjusted with a 12-0 run midway through the period, with Bowman and Robinson’s drives to the basket drawing fouls and opening up jump shots. Louisville’s cold shooting also began to heat up, led by Jordan Nwora who had 13 points in the first half. They ended up outrebounding the Cardinals 21-18 in the first half despite Louisville’s superior length. The Cardinals, however, were able to harass the BC offense into ten first half turnovers.

Louisville came out running in the second half, and BC turnovers along with cold shooting led to multiple fast breaks that extended the Louisville lead. After 5 minutes, the Cardinals had jumped out to a 13-point lead. Despite a short run to pull within 5, BC could not really recover. Their offensive ball movement really slowed down, players perhaps spooked away from making the extra pass in a game fraught with steals. 3-pointers and jump shots that had been falling earlier in the game were rimming out, and layups were hard to come by. Just when the game seemed completely over, down 18 points and under four minutes left to play, BC put up a furious run that would draw them back within 2. The trap defense was able to catch Louisville twice in a row and the Eagles suddenly couldn’t miss from 3. Steffon Mitchell, Jerome Robinson, and Jordan Chatman combined for four 3s in the last two minutes, the last of which put BC down 71-69 at the :50 mark. Ky Bowman fouled out on the trap attempt in the next possession and the Eagles offense had a hard time setting up a clean shot without him. Chatman was forced to take this last 3-point attempt off balance and he could not get it to fall. After that, BC was forced to foul and Louisville pulled away to end the game with a 77-69 win.

This loss puts BC’s record at 13-7 and 3-4 in the conference. They will get another chance to grab an ACC road win at Syracuse on Wednesday night at 7 PM.

At 3-3 in the ACC, each game becomes more and more important as Boston College attempts to earn its first NCAA tournament berth in more than a decade. ACC game number 7 will be no cakewalk either, as the Eagles will travel to Louisville to take on the Cardinals. Louisville is currently the number 16 team in RPI. This would be a huge resume booster for Jim Christian and his team if they want to be in the conversation on Selection Sunday. After missing out on big wins against Clemson and UVA, getting a win on the road against a very good team would go a long way.

Keys to the Game

The most important key for the Eagles today will be to protect the basketball. Similarly to FSU, Louisville likes to press and use their length and athleticism to create turnovers, which lead to easy buckets. If Ky Bowman and Jerome Robinson can continue to break presses with relative ease, this game will at least be close. If the Louisville defense doesn’t let BC get into rhythm offensively, this could be a loooooong game for the Eagles.

Louisville’s Strengths

As stated above, Louisville is long, athletic, and loves to force turnovers. Louisville has been a very good team this year, coming in with a 14-4 record, and, aside from their matchup with Kentucky, have been in every game this year, including close losses to Purdue, Clemson, and Seton Hall. Look for them to try to make a statement on their home floor.

Cardinal To Watch Out For

#4 Quentin Snider is the engine that makes Louisville go. A 6’2” point guard, Snider averages 13, 3, and 4, so in other words, he’s a poor man’s Ky Bowman. My guess is Ky will be on him from the get-go and will be responsible with taking him out of the game as much as possible. It’ll also be interesting to see who is tasked with guarding Deng Adel, Louisville’s best scorer on the wing. Depending on their lineup it’ll either be Jordan Chatman or Steffon Mitchell.

Predictions

Matt: 76-70 BC. They handle turnovers and handle Louisville.

BC’s BEST CHANCE TO WIN

After Rick Pitinio’s abrupt firing upon the founding of his recruiting scandal, much of the Louisville fan base went into this season with a sense of nervousness on how their team would preform. Yet, acting head coach David Padgett has proven that this team can have success with him at the helm. The Cardinals are 14-4 (11-1 at home) and currently sit at second place in the ACC standings. However, while at first glance this may make Eagles fans nervous, this game is still very winnable for BC.

While Louisville’s record and standing may appear better, the road they took to get there was much easier than the Eagles. Three of the ACC teams that the Cardinals beat are in the bottom half of the ACC standings (VT, FSU, Pitt) with ND being the only ‘honorable’ ACC win so far this season. Additionally, Louisville has had multiple nail-bitter victories against non-conference opponents such as Albany and Seton Hall.

This is going to be quite the bird fight as each team is pretty even statistically in RPG (BC - 38.6 UL - 39.6 ), FG % (BC - .528 UL - .516 ), and 3-point % (BC - .370 UL - .348 ). So if you all are looking for a good pregame to the Pats game, this ACC thriller should surely be on your radar.
