The game made us sad, but these photos are great

This weekend’s Boston College vs. Notre Dame football game was... not our favorite game to watch. On the plus side, our photographer took some terrific photos of the action. You can find more of Kathryn’s work on her website and twitter. Relive the good moments and bad moments from Saturday’s game below. And maybe share this gallery with your Notre Dame friends that actually want to remember this game?

Boston College got steamrolled on Saturday, completely falling apart in the second half as Notre Dame routed the Eagles in front of a sold out crowd. The first half of the game was exciting, but ended on a sour note which I will get into in a little bit. Honestly, there were a few positives to take from this game, and yes a whole lot of negatives. I’ll fully admit that I left the game halfway through the third quarter because it was just impossible to watch, but the game was out of hand after that and didn’t really matter. So here we go!

Thumbs Up

Jon Hilliman: Yes he had a fumble at the end of the game when BC was trying to mount a comeback, but for the most part it was nice seeing him look explosive again and attacking the line of scrimmage. There was another reason why he looked good and it was....

Run Blocking: Was it perfect? No, but it was drastically improved from the week before. Notre Dame looked stout against Georgia just a week before but BC was able to open gaps for long runs on multiple drives on Saturday. Also a tip of the cap to Ben Petrula who looked much more comfortable at center this week.

Turnovers: They needed them, and they got them. A nice interception by Lukas Denis to end the first half (we will get to the carnage after that later), and a fumble recovery. BC got what they needed to flip the field, it’s just too bad the offense was only able to put up 3 points off of them.

Charlie Callinan: Big time game for the senior with two nice touchdown catches, the first with a beautiful dive in the first half.

Max Shulze-Geisthovel: This kid is a touchback machine. Really impressive leg on Das Boot.

Thumbs Down

Interior Run Defense: Josh Adams looked like the second coming of Herschel Walker out there on Saturday, and the bulk of the blame has to go to the guys up front. Most of the yards came with runs right up the middle, and the tackles Noa Merrit and Ray Smith were completely ineffective. Even when BC stacked the box, Adams and Brandon Wimbush just needed to get to the second level and they were gone. It was just a massive cluster bleep, part of that goes to the talent on the line, and part of the blame has to go to Jim Reid and Steve Addazio for the scheme.

The End Of The First Half: Last week when I did the BCI podcast with Eric Hoffses, he said he expected that Steve Addazio would pull out all the stops to win this game. Trick plays, aggressive play calling, etc etc. Did we see any of that on Saturday? No. We saw a series of downs that was emblematic of the Steve Addazio ERA at BC. The defense made a huge play, and put BC in position to take the lead or just get points. And what does he do? With two time outs he has Anthony Brown throw, and then runs the dive to go into halftime. This wasn’t aggressive play calling at all, this was trademark Steve Addazio offense. After the game he said he didn’t like the percentages and kept talking about chucking it down the field also he was afraid that Brown would turn the ball over. Come on, BC just needed two chunk plays, say two 10 yard passes and then try a field goal and you have points. In the end did this play matter? Probably not, but it sent a clear message to the fans and even worse the players that the coaching staff didn’t believe in them and we saw the game completely unravel after this.

Penalties: I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I believe BC had five false start penalties. For an offense that can’t seem to make explosive plays, these were absolute back breakers. Every time BC had a good drive going, it seemed like there would be movement, whether a lineman or a wide receiver. These penalties happen, but not as often if the team is well coached and disciplined.

Kobay White: He certainly has the skills to be a game changer, but this is two games in a row where he has made mistakes that have caused turnovers. Anthony Brown’s interception was basically just ripped out of White’s hands by an aggressive Notre Dame defender. Couple that with being basically invisible (Tommy Sweeney is guilty of this as well) and he ends up in this column.

The Use Of Harold Landry: I don’t understand the snap count of Harold Landry at all. Michael Sullivan of Rivals put it best:

The Eagles have allowed 21 points without Harold Landry on the field, and 0 with him on the field. That's not a coincidence.
— Michael Sullivan (@MichaelJSully) September 16, 2017

True he isn’t going to fix the interior defense, but Harold Landry needs to be out there every play. I have never seen an preseason All American become so invisible as this.

Gameday Atmosphere: The fans were certainly jacked up, but BC didn’t seem ready. On a day where temps reached the mid 80’s BC ran out of bottled water and beer by mid way through the

Before the game fell apart, anyway

What to pick for The Key Play for this game? The Fighting Irish had about thirty runs for 50+ yards, so I guess you could pick one of those. Certainly they were what broke the Eagles, but there were too many of them to choose just one.

There was also Steve Addazio’s baffling, indefensible decision at the end of the first half to not make an attempt at getting some points with the ball on the ND 44, 18 seconds, and two timeouts in his pocket. But that wasn’t really a “play.”

Instead, I’m going with a play that turned momentum back when BC was still in the game — and going for the lead — before things got out of hand in the second half.

7:46 remaining in the 3rd quarter
4th & 1 at the Notre Dame 30

Jon Hilliman run for no gain -- TURNOVER ON DOWNS
ND 14, BC 13

First and foremost, this isn’t Jon Hilliman’s fault. Notre Dame knows BC is going to run. BC is set up for Power O — we’re running.

But the bigger problem is, why is the play call to set up the running back seven yards behind the line of scrimmage and run the ball into a wall? You know there’s going to be a pile of humanity at the line of scrimmage. This sort of play just takes too long to develop.

There were so many more better options, not the least of which is just doing the QB keeper. Even if that play fails, at least it makes more sense.

It’s hard to remember now because of how everything fell to pieces in the 2nd half, but BC not only was in the game at this point, but they were going for the lead. You like BC’s chances to get 3 points with Colton “In N Out” LichtenBurger kicking the lights out, and while it may not have mattered in the long run, it’s hard to think of how game flow might have changed from that point.

This finished off a stretch of three straight drives where the Eagles started with he ball in Notre Dame territory and only came away with three points. You aren’t going to win too many games doing that.

BC isn’t supposed to lose this way.

Boston College did everything it said it had to do.

The Eagles won the turnover battle while the game was still in the balance against Notre Dame (2-1), and got improved play from redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown. BC also saw running back Jon Hilliman cross 100 yards on the ground, and played outstanding special teams all around.

Boston College (1-2, 0-1 ACC) even held the Irish under 100 yards through the air on 11 of 24 passing.

None of it mattered.

That's because, while BC took small steps forward in all those areas, it took several big steps back when it came to stopping the run in a 49-20 loss to Notre Dame. The Irish absolutely bullied the Eagles, rushing for 515 yards and seven touchdowns, all on over 10 yards per carry. Quarterback Brandon Wimbush, who struggled mightily when he went to the air, had little trouble finding running room against the BC front seven, as he set a new single-game rushing record for Irish quarterbacks with 207 yards on the ground and four touchdowns.

Oh, and he wasn't even the game's leading rusher. That would be running back Josh Adams, who broke a pair of 50+ yard runs in the first half to set up Irish scores, both of them coming right up the middle, where the seas seemed to part for him.

Boston College was without star linebacker Connor Strachan, but the Eagles' issues were bigger than any one player. The middle of the BC defense showed little resistance, and when Wimbush got on the edges, there seemed to be infinite cutback lanes.

Another issue that will loom large is the role Harold Landry is playing for this team. Coach Steve Addazio has said repeatedly that he wants to keep his star pass rusher fresh for the end of games, and he played the nation's reigning sack king very sparingly today.

Landry played almost exclusively on third down, and when he did get in, his presence was rarely felt, only generating three hurries, and missing a tackle on a 65-yard Wimbush touchdown run.

BC fans are used to seeing their team lose in a certain way, but you can't pin this on bad quarterback play. Anthony Brown wasn't Tom Brady, but he showed growth from last week to this week. BC's rush offense also improved, as freshman Ben Petrula settled in at center, and the kicking game was perfect, with Colton Lichtenberg hitting both of his field goal attempts, and Mike Knoll pinning the Irish inside their own 20 on seven of his eight punts.

The secondary, which struggled last season, got a boost off the bench from Lukas Denis, who broke up a pair of passes, and came away with an interception, while Kam Moore and Isaac Yiadom both had great days in coverage.

When all those things come together, BC is supposed to win, not lose by four scores. It will be back to the drawing board yet again this week for Boston College, but the Eagles now have a whole new set of problems to deal with.

Things started so well...

On a day that started with some promise, the Boston College defense just could not hold up against Notre Dame's rushing attack.

Not only did Notre Dame (2-1) running back Josh Adams set a new career high with 229 yards on the ground (4th best single-game rushing total in ND history), quarterback Brandon Wimbush also rushed for 207 yards and four touchdowns himself, breaking a record for single-game QB rushing yards that had stood for the Irish since 1969.

On the day, Notre Dame rushed for 515 yards and seven touchdowns on over 10 yards per carry.

After a week of bemoaning its turnover-prone offense, Boston College (1-2, 0-1 ACC) actually saw improved play from redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown, who largely protected the ball while the game was still competitive, and dropped a 24-yard touchdown right into Charlie Callinan's hands in the first half. After the game was out of reach, Brown again found Callinan for a 13-yard score, on another beautifully thrown ball in the fourth quarter.

But the game would not be competitive for very long after intermission. Notre Dame's ground game continued to grind away at the Eagle defense and, combined with Brown’s first of two interceptions, the Irish went on a 21-0 run in the third and fourth quarter to push the game out of reach.

The wheels may be coming off...

Boston College's momentum was halted in the third quarter, as a turnover, along with a continued inability to slow the Notre Dame ground game, put the Eagles behind the eight ball.

Quarterback Brandon Wimbush ran in a three-yard score late in the period, following an interception thrown by BC's Anthony Brown. Moments earlier, it was Notre Dame's Tony Jones Jr. scoring on his first carry of the day, but today's star has been Irish running back Josh Adams.

Sitting at over 200 yards rushing with a quarter still left to play, Adams has had a career afternoon.

Can BC turn it around in the fourth?

I can’t. I just can’t.

With the Notre Dame Fighting Irish trying to run a two minute drill late in the second half, the Boston College Eagles caught a break off a tip-drill interception by Lukas Denis.

The Boston College offense then ran two plays for two yards to reach the ten second left mark in the first half with two timeouts at the Notre Dame 40 yard line.

What does BC do?

If you guessed walk off the field without taking two relatively risk-free shots at the end zone, you are a winner!

Despite having enough time to take two shots at the end zone, Steve Addazio instead declined to call a play or call a timeout and gave up a decent shot at the end zone in a game where offense has been hard to come by.

If you’re here trying to find someone here who is going to defend this absolutely atrocious decision, you should keep looking.
