Where did things fall apart for the Eagles?

Losing weeks have the worst Key Plays. This week is no exception.

Things got ugly in a hurry for the Eagles and it was an embarrassing loss. But toward the end of the half, the Eagles actually managed to look pretty good, if only for a short stretch. Unfortunately, things came apart all at once and the Eagles were cooked.

1:44 remaining in the 2nd quarter
2nd & 4 at the Boston College 23

Anthony Brown pass intercepted by Essang Bassey at the BC 30 — TOUCHDOWN WF
WF 21, BC 7

As bad as things started for BC, the were actually in the midst of a solid turnaround when this happened. After Wake Forest scored to go up 14-0, BC forced the Deacs to go 3 and out on their next possession, stormed 57 yards down the field on 8 plays for a touchdown, and held Wake to a four play drive on their next possession.

That set up the Eagles for another two minute drill with a timeout remaining, and BC looked poised to break through and quite possibly tie the game up at halftime. After an Anthony Brown scramble for 6 yards to start the drive, though, the Eagles truly blew it.

This one play managed to showcase just about everything that went wrong for the Eagles on Saturday all at once.

First, while the offensive line did give Brown enough time to throw the ball, it was only because the play was designed to be a quick pass. Even so, an Eagle lineman is pushed into Brown immediately after he releases the ball. It didn’t affect the throw directly, but it still wasn’t good.

Next, Brown’s pass is not good. This sort of play should be the bread and butter for the Eagles passing offense with a freshman under center, and it’s botched. Brown throws the ball behind Kobay White, and it goes right through his hands and into the breadbasket of Bassey. From there it’s a pretty easy jaunt to paydirt.

Kobay White’s going to have a great career at BC, and yes, the ball was launched behind him on a rocket — but a pass going through the hands of a receiver turned into a recurring theme all afternoon, and the game might have turned out differently if the Eagles caught the football.

The Pick 6 really took the wind out of BC’s sails. It might be hard to remember now, but the Eagles really did start to look good at this point... I guess right up until they didn’t.

Football, man.

The game wasn’t great, but our photos are!

Yesterday, Boston College football lost the first home game of the season to Wake Forest by a score of 34-10. It was a tough game to watch as a BC fan, but BC Interruption’s terrific photographer, Kathryn Riley, took some amazing photos in case you want to relive the happier parts of the game.

The Eagles need to re-group quickly with Notre Dame coming to town.

Where does Boston College go from here?

Wake Forest came to Alumni Stadium and capitalized on four Eagle turnovers to pull away 34-10 Saturday, killing any optimism the Boston College fan base was feeling after last week's close win over Northern Illinois in the process.

Coach Steve Addazio was quick to point out that the stat sheet tells a much different story than the final score, and he isn't wrong there. Wake Forest only out-gained BC by four yards (309 to 305), and BC actually finished with four more first downs (19 to 15).

But you win on the scoreboard, and BC wasn't competitive there for much after halftime.

"Statistically, it was pretty close with the numbers, but we turned the ball over," Addazio said.

Three critical junctures killed the Eagles Saturday. First, running back Jon Hilliman fumbled at the Boston College 25-yard line, setting up Wake Forest’s opening score moments later.

Then, just before halftime, BC attempted a two-minute drill trailing 14-7. The Eagles had just scored and forced a Wake Forest punt, but redshirt freshman Anthony Brown's pass bounced off Kobay White's hands and was returned for a touchdown.

That swing sent the Eagles into the locker room trailing by 14, and took the air out of an Alumni Stadium that was beginning to wake up.

Finally, Brown was again picked off in the third, this time on a pass he threw directly into triple coverage. It was the young signal-caller's third interception of the day, and prompted Addazio to put graduate student Darius Wade in at QB on BC's next drive.

But by then, this one was in the books.

It's hard to feel any positivity after this game. Not with Notre Dame coming to town next week. Not with the meat of the ACC schedule still coming up, including games against national powers like Clemson, Louisville and Florida State. Not with senior center Jon Baker out for the year with a knee injury.

But, take a breath.

Did BC allow things to snowball out of control, at home, against a beatable opponent? Absolutely. Does that mean Anthony Brown can't learn from this and go on to have a solid first year starting? Absolutely not.

In fact, you could argue that BC had bigger problems when it tried to throw the ball, as two of Brown's interceptions came off the hands of his own receivers, and a botched snap cost BC 30 yards on a promising early drive.

BC has to catch the ball better, or its young QB won't have a prayer, but freshman Ben Petrula, who made his first start at center, actually acquitted himself well, other than the aforementioned snap. Making his first college football start, and never having played center before, Petrula impressed Addazio, and there pretty much isn't anywhere to go but up from there.

It was a Murphy's Law kind of opener, but the fortunate thing for Addazio and his team is that they have time on their side with 10 games left. Whether they use that time to recover and make fans forget about Saturday, or dig their hole even deeper, remains to be seen.

It was an ugly home opener for the Eagles.

Any momentum Boston College's football team had following a close win at Northern Illinois last week was quickly dashed in Saturday's home opener against Wake Forest. The Eagles began ACC play with a sloppy performance, turning the ball over four times in a 34-10 loss to the Demon Deacons.

The Eagles did show some promise early, as redshirt freshman Anthony Brown hit Jeff Smith with a beautiful throw on a deep out route. But, moments later, freshman center Ben Petrula, making his first career start in place of the injured Jon Baker, snapped the ball right past Brown for a long loss, and BC was forced to punt.

Then the turnovers began.

Late in the third quarter, senior running back Jon Hilliman coughed it up deep in BC territory, leading to a 9-yard touchdown pass from Wake Forest quarterback John Wolford to Greg Dortch.

A 29-yard Wolford rush gave Wake a 14-0 lead early in the second, but Brown bounced back, marching the Eagles 57 yards in 10 plays, culminating with a touchdown pass to Hilliman.

The BC defense then forced a punt, but just when it appeared BC was about to seize momentum, Brown's next pass bounced off the hands of receiver Kobay White, and was returned for a 30-yard touchdown by Wake Forest's Essang Bassey.

Smith would lead the Eagles on a field goal drive to make it 21-10 early in the third, but threw a pass right to Wake's Jessie Bates III on BC's next drive. Bates returned it back to the BC three, and Cade Carney punched it in moments later to make it 31-10 Wake Forest.

After that, Darius Wade would enter the game in relief of Brown, but fared no better, The graduate student missed HJeff Smith on a 4th and four, before Wake Forest iced the game wit a 13-play drive that ate up nearly eight minutes of clock. The Deacs only got a field goal out of the possession, but the game was effectively over at that point.

Check back for more coverage after coach Steve Addazio's press conference.

Welp...

Things got worse for BC in the third quarter, as yet another turnover handed Wake Forest another short field, and eventual touchdown.

Late in the period, redshirt freshman Anthony Brown forced a throw into triple coverage which was picked off by Wake's Jessie Bates III and run back to the BC 3.

Cade Carney punched it in moments later for the Demon Deacons to make it 31-10.

Michael Walker returned the ensuing kickoff deep into WF territory, and backup quarterback Darius Wade took over under center on the next drive.

But the QB change did little to jump start the BC offense. Facing 4th and four, Wade over threw a wide open Jeff Smith to hand Wake Forest the ball back. BC enters the 4th with the ball and Wade still under center...

Just when it looked like BC was gaining some momentum…

Boston College took a step forward, then two steps back in the second quarter, as a late interception return gave Wake Forest a 14-point lead at intermission.

After a lengthy BC drive ended with a Brown touchdown pass to Jon Hilliman, the Eagles forced a punt and looked to tie the game.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Brown's next pass bounces off the hands of receiver Kobay White, and was returned 30 yards by Wake's Essang Bassey for a touchdown.

BC will start the second half on defense, and will have its work cut out for it.

Turnovers plagued the Eagles early...

A promising first quarter quickly turned sour for Boston College, as the Eagles turn the ball over twice in the first quarter, handing Wakfe Forest a 7-0 lead at the break.

The Eagles did have one promising drive in Demon Deacon territory, but a deep pass by Anthony Brown to Jeff Smith was negated by a 20 yard loss on a botched snap by new starting freshman center Ben Petrula.

Brown then missed a pass high, leading to a Wake Forest interception, giving WF the ball in BC territory to start the second.
