What stood out in this class?

Boston College football has their class of 2017, now it’s time for the staff to see whether they hit or miss on many of the kids who signed on. First off, the first gut reaction is the class falls into line with what we expect with Steve Addazio. According to Rivals they are dead last in the ACC, and 66th in the country. Not numbers that are horribly impressive. But hey, Addazio says it’s not about the numbers, these are BC kids and he’s going to coach them up. Let’s see if that is true or just coach speak.

Boston College didn’t have any huge last minute splashes like they have in the past. In 2016 we got Elijah Johnson, who went on to start by the end of the season. Other years BC landed Tyler Rouse at the very end.

Biggest Surprise

Landing AJ Dillon: When he flipped from Michigan to BC I was completely shocked. The rumors were flying that this was going to happen, but to actually see him land at Chestnut Hill was stunning. We have seen dozens of elite recruits go elsewhere, but for Addazio to actually lose one, then convince him to return, that was pretty impressive.

Diamond In the Rough

OL Ben Petrula and DB Brandon Sebastian: I’m going to take the easy way out here and take two players, both of whom I believe will contribute quickly. Petrula, a St. Peter’s Prep grad had a solid offer sheet before he committed to BC. Sebastian is an athletic freak, who could be ready to land on the depth chart sooner rather than later. He also chose Boston College over Michigan, so take that for what it’s worth.

Instant Contributor

Travis Levy. Already on campus, and the Delaware Gatorade Player of the Year, Boston College is going to need help at the running back position with the loss of Tyler Rouse and Myles Willis. Dillon will get his chance, but he’s coming back from an injury, and Levy will be ready for some of those handoffs early in the season.

Biggest Disappointment

Failing To land Kwity Paye. There are certain decommits that sting, and this one probably will be up there. The Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year could have been a perfect plug in at defensive tackle after Harold Landry graduates at the end of this year. I’ve had someone who covers Paye’s games tell me he is the best player he’s ever seen out of Rhode Island.

Where Did They Come From?

The Class of 2017 came from many of the usual hunting groups for the Eagles. There were three from California, Connecticut, and New York, only two from Massachusetts. The Eagles landed one from Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, Alabama and New Hampshire. The State with the most recruits for the Eagles? That would be the State of New Jersey.

Oh well..

Boston College lost a few commits this recruiting cycle, which isn’t that big of a problem, as most schools go through this (and apparently this year it happened in record numbers). Earlier in the recruiting cycle BC lost recruits to UCLA (Austin Burton) Michigan (Kwity Paye), Pittsburgh (Jason Pinnock) and Michigan State (Deari Todd). All of those are great schools, this time however Boston College lost one to a lesser school, and that lesser school is UConn.

Gardner was a later commit, who was pursued hard by Randy Edsall after he took over at the lesser school in Storrs, CT. Earlier this week Gardner took down Boston College commit from his profile, so it seemed inevitable that he would be going to UConn. Boston College had two linebackers already in this class (Paul Theobald and Isaiah McDuffie).

Analysis: Haynes is a very interesting recruit for a few reasons. His father Michael is possibly one of the greatest defensive backs in the history of the NFL, playing for both the Patriots and Raiders. Secondly, there were rumblings that Tate was on the verge of being poached by San Diego State, a school that allegedly wanted him to play quarterback. But in the end Boston College apparently gave him the opportunity to try out at QB (he’s listed in the Addazio video as both QB/DB), so we shall see where he fits best in Chestnut Hill.

Analysis: Tight end was a position of emerging talent for the Eagles in 2017. Whether it was the more tradition skill set like Tommy Sweeney and Idrab Kodrizi or the hybrid TE’s like Charlie Callinan and Chris Garrison, Boston College has some definite talent at this position, and for the first time in ages used it in the passing game. Quickly looking at his film, it is clear that Brown will be a pass catching tight end, not used just for blocking. Whether Addazio has him bulk up more when he gets to college remains to be seen, but he has good hands, and the more pass catching tight ends that BC can put out there the better.

From Mission Viejo to Boston, here comes a new QB

Boston College’s Class of 2017 apparently wasn’t complete this morning as they added one more recruit, as QB Matt McDonald announced on Twitter that he is going to be an Eagle.

As reported earlier this week Matt was visited at home on Monday night, with his father Paul (another NFL quarterback) in attendance as well. McDonald threw for 2,704 yards and 39 touchdowns in his senior year, which probably is what brought him to Boston College’s attention. According to his HUDL film (take that with a grain of salt), he also runs a 4.7 40. He only held one other offer, which was from Cornell.

Matt played at Mission Viejo in a very competitive league and helped lead his team to a perfect record.

Again this is all according to Matt’s personal Twitter account, Boston College’s website hasn’t added him on there yet, so his commitment hasn’t officially been verified at this time. But this seems like a good sign.

Analysis: Boston College receivers certainly improved in 2016 over the abysmal output they failed to put together in 2015. Jeff Smith and Michael Walker led the way for the Eagles, but some depth at the position certainly would be welcomed. Thadd Smith, Charlie Callinan and Ben Glines are all still on the roster and should be able to produce for the Eagles in 2017, and Nolan Bergerson is still around. Eagles redshirted two freshman last year in Christian McStravick and Kobay White, so I would expect that Jordan Williams will be given a year as well to get himself acclimated. But with decent size, hands and speed he could certainly be on the depth chart in the future.

However, Muse will be playing safety at the Heights. The video above is of his defensive highlights but you can check out HUDL and see videos of a ton of big time plays on offense as well. The bottom line is that Muse is an explosive playmaker with some good size. The BC coaches will have to coach him up to bring him along at safety but the size and athleticism is there with him.
