Well that was delightful.

You have to hand it to the coaching staff because this team was extremely well prepared for this game. Coming off a bye week, this Eagles flat out dominated. Domination is when your opponent knows exactly what you’re going to do, and are still helpless to stop anything. That is sort of performance we saw today. It started off a bit slow, and a missed field goal early on had to hurt the very fiber of your being, but it all went swimmingly afterwards.

In his first start, Dennis Grosel did just enough. He wasn’t asked to do much, only attempting 15 passes, but when he did, he had all the time in the world. This offensive line has been world beaters, and we will continue to praise them week in week out. They gave up zero pressures on the day, and boast the best pass block efficiency in the ACC per PFF. And we surely won’t overlook their contribution to the over 400 yards rushing. My lord. With this unit having been a major question mark due to turnover coming into the season, it’s really great to see how they flourished and how consistent they have been.

Back on Grosel, while he only completed six passes, he did not turn the ball over and he had three good runs of his own for about 20 yards. Coach Addazio explained that he still wanted to maintain on the same ratio of run:pass that they have been all season, but given how effective running the ball proved to be, they just stuck with what was working. I don’t know if I completely believe that, but either way I would have to imagine leaning even more on the strength of the team in a normal game would be the best course of action. Grosel looked comfortable today on few attempts, but to depend on his arm any more than you need to, especially against defenses that aren’t Louisville, might be foolhardy.

Against a team that was considered one of the best in the conference and country against the run, the Eagles ran wild. Dillon ran for 223 yards and three scores, and big David Bailey for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Both guys were just incredible running through contact. AJ found himself on PFF’s National Team of the Week, and David Bailey an ACC Player of the Week alongside OL Zion Johnson in his first start.

That’s five straight hundred yard games, and Dillon is now 75 yards short of Andre Williams’ school rushing record and two touchdowns away from that record. As we likely near the end of his career on the Heights, it’s important to take in a game like this and appreciate all he’s done donning the maroon and gold.

The team defense had by far their best performance of the season and gave the Wolfpack a sense of BC’s struggles all season. They held NC State to 4-17 on third down, and barely gave up any yardage until the late stages of the game. Bill Sheridan unleashed some promising freshman. Save for some small learning moments here and there, guys like Jason Maitre and Shitta Sillah came up BIG. Maitre opened up BC’s onslaught with the pick six and Sillah notched a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Max Richardson did Max Richardson things. He’s fourth in the nation with 47 solo tackles.

A few other general notes, good kick returns from Levy and Glines, but four kickoff infractions from Danny Longman were completely unacceptable. Yes, we barely get that many opportunities to kick off to begin with, but need to shore that up immediately. Hunter Long has been a revelation this season. The sophomore has 18 catches for 361 yards, enough to lead all tight ends in the ACC. He’s extremely effective per catch. We have a whole host of really capable tight ends, but Long is starting to see more an uptick in snaps and routes and rightfully so.

Great team win that could not have come at a better time. We will temper expectations for next week [and still for the rest of the season], but for now we rest easy.

BC improves to 4-3 (2-2) with a dominant win

After scuffling their way through the first half of the schedule, Boston College came out of the bye week needing a strong showing at home against North Carolina State. They got just that, dominating the Wolfpack on both sides of the ball in a 45-24 victory.

Any questions surrounding the quarterback position will have to wait until next week, as NC State had no answer for the BC rushing attack. The Eagles piled up an astounding 429 yards on the ground, including 223 and 181 yard performances by AJ Dillon and David Bailey, respectively. The defense looked well rested, and put forth their best effort of the season, holding the Wolfpack to just 56 rushing yards.

BC got the scoring going with a defensive touchdown. After punter Grant Carlson pinned the Wolfpack at their own 1, redshirt freshman Jason Maitre picked off Bailey Hockman’s third down pass and sauntered in from 8 yards out for the score.

NC State drove down the field looking for an answer, but the BC defense came up with an impressive goal line stand, forcing an incompletion on 4th and goal from the 1 to keep the Pack off the scoreboard.

After the teams exchanged short field goals, the Eagles began to impose their will on the ground. BC capitalized on a shanked NC State punt when David Bailey broke through the line and rumbled his way 54 yards to the end zone, giving the Eagles a 17-3 lead.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, Bailey broke loose again, this time scoring from 48 yards to make it 24-3. The Wolfpack went into halftime with just 103 yards of offense, compared to BC’s 304.

After the BC defense came up with their second goal line stand of the game, the Eagles put together a 16 play 98 yard drive, capped by a 2 yard Dillon touchdown carry. The Wolfpack responded with a touchdown of their own, marching 75 yards on 9 plays, finished off by a Devin Leary touchdown pass to Thayer Thomas on 4th and goal, cutting the lead to 31-10.

Boston College continued to run all over the Pack, snuffing out any possibility of a comeback. A nine play (all runs) 67 yards scoring drive was finished off by Dillon’s second touchdown rush of the game to put BC up 38-10.

NC State answered again when Thomas hauled in his second touchdown reception of the game to make it 31-17. But after a failed onside kick attempt, BC went back to the ground, rushing six consecutive times to cover 54 yards, punctuated by Dillon’s 3rd touchdown.

In his first career start, Grosel went just 6/15 for 103 yards, and attempted only three passes in the second half. Surely he’ll need to play a larger role next week against Clemson, but on a day when the Eagles averaged north of seven yards per carry, he protected the football and let his running backs eat. And eat they did.

But will the pack survive?

Boston College’s bye week really could not have come at a better time. After two losing two tight games, and more importantly quarterback Anthony Brown to another heart-breaking injury, this was a good time for the team to regroup and prepare Dennis Grosel for his first collegiate start. Not to mention somewhat calm us all down and remove any expectations ever apparent. Grosel came on in relief in the second quarter of the Louisville game and played admirably. He was 9/24 for 111 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. As long as Grosel doesn’t try and do too much as it felt on the final drive against Louisville, maybe BC can eke out some wins here or there.

The Wolfpack enter this game 4-2 on the season, coming off a 16-10 win over Syracuse last week. They’ve lost bad in both of their road games to FSU and West Virginia, but have played solid defensively, particularly against the run. Their front is the best part of their team, but at least their opposite is the best part of the Eagles’ roster. They’ve allowed only 66.7 yards/game on the ground, but will surely be focused on bottling up Dillon and Bailey in this contest. Up front, we’ll need to keep an eye out for Larrell Murchison at defensive tackle, alongside Alim McNeill.

On the other side, their offense has looked quite inconsistent, and a few quarterbacks have already seen action. This week, we’re looking at Bailey Hockman and maybe some of freshman Devin Leary. Hockman has appeared in three games, and has a 57.1 completion percentage, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Their main backs are all young have shown a few flashes, but really haven’t put up the numbers yet to show for. That being said, there’s nothing like a game against Boston College to make your offense look like a juggernaut. They know all about the Eagles’ susceptibility to explosive plays all around the field.

I think a vast majority of us aren’t expecting all too much for this game, and honestly the remainder of the season. But hey, sometimes moments like these can galvanize a team, bring them closer, and play more inspired ball. Every player knows they’re going to have to step up more than ever. Hopefully change will come soon, but until such time, it does us no good to dwell on things that have been litigated ad nauseam. In Grosel we trust.

Over/Under: 51.5

NC State has won two in a row against the Eagles and two in a row in Chestnut Hill. I like to think that BC will come out strong, and I’m sure we’ll see some trickery in this game. If there is a kitchen sink, it will be thrown. One thing is for sure, BC is not looking ahead to Clemson. That’s one of the more ridiculous things I’ve heard this week. I think the best hope to win is to win in an ugly fashion, but I’m all about high risk, high reward plays now. Let’s make it weird.

Going with an unconventional choice

It’s gotten pretty depressing breaking down where things went wrong (or more accurately, picking one of the things that went wrong) in our losses the last few weeks. So it’s nice to be able to take my pick of good things, for once!

The two obvious choices this week were the trick play for the touchdown and the game-sealing interception. But as everyone’s watched these over and over again (I assume, anyway... that’s what I’ve been doing all weekend), I wanted to bring to light one of my favorite play calls of the game from Scott Loeffler and Steve Addazio.

2:26 remaning in the 2nd quarter
BC ball, 3rd and 18 from the BC 4 yard line
Patrick Towles pass incomplete deep left (Michael Walker)

“At 3rd and 18, this is going to be a safety scenario for Scott Loeffler,” said the ESPN crew. “Would not be surprised to see a draw.” Well, neither would the rest of us, given that that’s what we saw on first and second down. And in all fairness, that probably wasn’t the worst decision they could have made.

But everyone gives Daz & Loeffler crap for constantly going conservative, so it was nice to see them go for an aggressive play call — one that was relatively low risk and high reward.

On third and long in the shadow of your own goalpost, there is exactly zero benefit to running the ball into the line. You’re more likely to fumble the football than you are to break through a 20 man box for any meaningful gain.

But the deep route has an unappreciated benefit — the potential for an automatic first down on pass interference.

NC State isn’t even caught completely off guard on the play call. They aren’t stacking the box, because they know they don’t have to. The two safeties are plenty of backup to stop any threatening run. But Michael Walker’s got single coverage, and the corner can’t defend him without a foul.

That gives BC the first down with a good amount of clock to work with on the rest of the drive. They didn’t get any points out of it, but they gave themselves a chance. With a play like this, it doesn’t even have to be successful to work out.
