What were the big takeaways from last weekend?

This past weekend, Boston College went 1-1 at the IceBreaker, dropping the opener to Air Force before rebounding in a big way with a win against host Denver in the consolation game. What were the main takeaways from BC’s first two real games?

1 >> Joe Woll is your #1 goalie: We weren’t 100% sure going in to the weekend if goaltending duties were going to be split early on, or if (presumably) Woll would be given a chance to take the job and run with it. As it turns out, BC went with Woll twice in two days — and they ended up being very glad that they did.

In game two against Denver, Woll put up a stellar performance by any standard, not just the standard held for a freshman in his second collegiate game. Woll made 40 saves on 41 shots, including turning aside 23 Denver chances during a third period onslaught to nail down the win

Woll looked sound, confident, and in control. So long as he keeps playing like that, he’ll be your #1 goalie.

2 >>> BC is still mixing and matching with their top line: In the exhibition and in the opener against Air Force, JD Dudek flanked Colin White and Ryan Fitzgerald on the top line. In the second game, it was Matt Gaudreau who was dropped in on their wing. On Friday night with Dudek, the trio combined for 15 shot attempts. They were quieter on Saturday, combining for 7. In neither case did they light the lamp.

BC was forced to make some changes to their forward lines on Saturday due to Chris Calnan being held out, but it seems likely that the Eagles will try a few things with their first line until someone really clicks with White and Fitzgerald.

3>>> The penalty kill looks good: The Eagles killed 13 of 15 penalties they took on the weekend, and largely looked good doing it. One of the two goals they gave up was a 5-on-3 goal on Friday night, and the other was an absolute rocket by Will Butcher from the point, one of those what-can-you-do goals. But other than those goals the PK looked solid. BC actually held Air Force to just 5 total shot attempts and 4 shots on goal in their 7 power play opportunities. If you do that regularly, you’re not going to give up many goals.

4>>> Calnan still isn’t 100%: The injury bug was a huge problem for BC last season and it proved to be an issue already in game two. After rolling out a full lineup in game one, Chris Calnan - still recovering from a lower-body injury from last season - was held out in game two. Casey Fitzgerald was also held out after suffering a heavy hit against Air Force, though @BCHockey described both players’ absence as “precautionary.” BC performed admirably without two of their only veteran players but they’ll certainly hope to have both back this weekend against Wisconsin.

5>>> Third period issues are something to keep an eye on: You can’t declare a trend after two games, but BC struggled in the third period in both games this weekend, so keep an eye on that and see if it becomes a regular occurrence. On Friday, BC was in pretty solid control of the game against Air Force despite only leading 1-0, when things fell apart in the third period. On Saturday, though Joe Woll hung on, BC got outshot 23-5 in the third. It’s reasonable to think a young team was starting to run out of gas down the stretch, and reasonable to think that maybe the altitude (and missing Calnan/Fitzgerald in game 2) played a role as well. But we’ll have to see if the third period becomes an issue again this weekend.

The freshman goalie stood tall and helped BC edge out a big win

For 40 minutes on Saturday night, BC and Denver punched and counterpunched, looking to be pretty much equals on the ice. BC struck first; Denver got one back, then the Eagles retook the lead. Shots were 18-17 Denver after two periods.

Then, as the desperation for Denver increased and as BC went in to more and more of a shell to protect their narrow lead, things changed — Denver began completely dominating.

The Pioneers threw a remarkable 23 shots on the BC net in the third period, outshooting the Eagles 23-5. Overall for the game, DU had 69 shots attempts to BC’s 38.

Standing in the way to defend against the onslaught and lock down the Eagle victory? Joe Woll.

Woll, the freshman goaltender out of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri and the US National Team Development Program, left no doubt that he’s the team’s #1 goalie this weekend, playing the full sixty minutes between the pipes in both games and playing very well, stopping 64 of 67 shots he faced.

The freshman looked particularly poised and confident down the stretch last night. He wasn’t required to make many highlight-reel saves, but he did a good job of staying square to everything and remaining cool, calm and collected. The 6’3’’ Woll is actually quite reminiscent of watching Thatcher Demko, the point where it was easy to forget it wasn’t Demko between the pipes as BC was closing out the victory.

Thanks to Woll’s third period performance, the Eagles fly home from Denver with the feeling of having had a successful weekend. They went 1-1, and took down one of the nation’s marquee teams. For his role in it, Woll is the BC Interruption Player of the Game.

BCI PLAYER OF THE GAME STANDINGS:
Joe Woll 1
Austin Cangelosi 1
JD Dudek 1

It’s ICEBREAKER CONSOLATION TIME, y’all!

BC takes on Denver in one of the best (and probably one of the friendliest) inter-conference rivalries in college hockey in the third place game of the IceBreaker, after both teams lost to less-heralded opponents last night.

Both teams are ranked in the top 5 of the USCHO poll, although I think pretty much everyone on the planet who is not on the USCHO voting panel agrees BC’s rating was a bit silly.

Denver’s ranking is probably justified, and they will be looking to demonstrate that after losing to Ohio State despite dominating the Buckeyes last night in terms of shot attempts.

This will be your first chance to actually watch the Eagles this season - tune in on altitude2 if you get DirecTV, or stream the game on NCHC.TV. If you don’t want to pay for the video stream, listen for free on BCEagles.com, and join in the conversation here or on twitter: @bcinterruption, @joegrav and our Denver friend @letsgoDU will be live-tweeting the proceedings.

The Eagles and the Pioneers renew acquaintances in unusual circumstances

It’s one of college hockey’s mildly amusing spectacles: in-season tournaments that feature the consolation game as the televised, night game, because the host and marquee program lost on day one.

That’s what happened this weekend in the IceBreaker, as the Denver Pioneers were surprisingly tripped up by Ohio State 3-2 last night on their home ice. As a result, the Pios will take on Boston College, who was also upset 2-1 by Air Force.

Ohio State and Air Force will play at 6 PM ET for the IceBreaker crown. Then, the fans will file in and watch two blue-blood programs play for third place; the nightcap at 9 PM ET will be televised on Altitude2 and streamed on NCHC.tv.

The interesting thing about this game from a BC perspective - and for both teams, really - is that a game against Denver, while challenging, offers an opportunity to make this a truly successful weekend with a win. 1-1 with a win over Ohio State? That certainly would have been fine. But coming home 1-1 with a win over Denver would feel like a huge score. But coming home 0-2 would be a tough start for this young group as they try to get their legs under them this season.

While BC will no doubt be frustrated to have thrown away a third period lead in last night’s loss, there was plenty to feel positive about coming out of the game. BC outshot Air Force 38-26 on the game and particularly controlled the first two periods, outshooting the Falcons by a 28-13 margin. In the third period, things went sideways for BC thanks largely to taking too many penalties. BC was killing a 5-on-3 when Air Force scored their game winner with under 9 minutes to play.

Of course, beating Denver will be no small task. The Pioneers are rightly considered among the favorites to return to the Frozen Four. Denver will also come in frustrated to have not won last night, having out-attempted Ohio State 74-45 last night including 55-33 at even strength. Stars like Dylan Gambrell and Will Butcher (who somehow still hasn't graduated) will put a lot of pressure on BC's young defense and goaltender.

So, it’s on: a big game for both teams, and it’s just October 8. Welcome back, hockey season!

It’s a blue-blooded battle in the IceBreaker consolation game

Most folks thought Boston College would be playing Denver this weekend. Not many predicted it would be for third place at the IceBreaker, and not the title. But after both BC and DU fell in upset losses last night, the two titans now face off in a clash they’ll both view as a key early season test:

The Pioneers are certainly favored here, playing at home and bringing a much more veteran roster to the table than BC. But the Eagles have a great opportunity for a bounce back game, and to come home with a huge victory - so they’re likely thankful to have this crack at Denver rather than Ohio State.
