Redshirt Freshman WR suffered injury Saturday

On Monday, head coach Steve Addazio confirmed that redshirt freshman Wide Receiver Chris Garrison is out “an indefinite amount of time” with a broken left tibia.

Garrison suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s game against Buffalo, pulling up to make a 44-yard reception on an underthrown ball and making a hard landing on his left leg. He was removed from the field on a stretcher.

Addazio said that Garrison’s spirits are high and he’s “doing great,” but at this point he is unable to speculate on whether Garrison would have any chance of returning this season. Given the usual recovery time for an injury of this nature, it’s hard to imagine him being back any time soon, unless maybe BC makes a bowl game, giving extra time to recover.

Garrison, a 6’3’’, 237-pound New Hampshire native, has been one of BC’s weapons this season in its renewed passing attack. He redshirted last season, but has been involved in each game so far this year.

Addazio said in his weekly press conference that the rest of the team is largely injury-free.

Where did BC get on track?

It was a solid B performance from the Eagles on Saturday, but BC did take a little while to find their footing against a bad opponent. It wasn’t quite as bad a start as it was against Wagner where the Eagles actually fell behind, but BC was still only up 11 deep in the 2nd quarter.

On BC’s last drive of the 2nd quarter, the Eagles took over with 6:28 to go on the clock deep in their own territory, up 14-3, still much too close for comfort. And the drive started out really poorly.

On first and 10 from the BC 16, the Eagles overloaded the left side, but Hilliman couldn’t find a lane and was taken down for a three yard loss. Then, Towles threw a good screen to Michael Walker on the left side, but a 5 yard penalty negated the play. 3rd down wasn’t much better, with Rouse getting stuffed for no gain.

So, the Eagles are now setting themselves up for a problem. Only up 11, backed up in their own end, with Buffalo looking at getting the ball with good field position and over four minutes to play in the half, plus!, the Bulls to receive the opening kickoff of the 2nd half... things could have gone seriously awry here.

But, the Eagles made a play to swing momentum permanently to their sideline.

3rd and 18 from the BC 8 yard line
Patrick Towles screen pass to Tyler Rouse for 27 yards

There are a lot of players who did a lot of good things to make this play happen.

First, the offensive line on the right side deserves a world of props for their execution.

The whole thing starts with the right guard backing up a step or two. The DE comes right in to try and power his way through, leaving the Buffalo DT behind him on the line of scrimmage.

BC’s center and OT double team the DT and bulldoze him not back, but behind the DE, where he sees green and makes his run at Towles. But that was all part of the plan — the BC center and tackle both release, with Rouse springing out right behind them ready to receive the dump off. Now BC has a wide receiver, a center and a tackle all ready to blaze a trail for Rouse, and the run is on.

And on top of that, as well executed as it was, it still wouldn’t have been enough for the first down had Rouse not been able to slip through two Bulls defenders at the 20 to bust ahead for the extra 15 yards after contact for the first time.

With that, the drive went from as bad as possible to as good as possible. Instead of giving the ball, and momentum, back to the Bulls with 4 minutes to play in the half, the Eagles did just about everything right. BC drove the length of the field, moving the ball on some nice plays including a pass to Davon Jones out of the backfield reminiscent of Chase Rettig’s wheel route to Montel Harris against Clemson in 2010.

When all was said and done, the Eagles got the touchdown after going 84 yards on 11 plays, burning the clock all the way down to 21 seconds on their way to a 21-3 lead. With the BC defense playing well, that was a dagger to Buffalo’s hopes, and the Eagles wouldn’t look back from there.

A look back at Saturday’s highlights

Boston College played fairly well through the wind and the mist on Saturday at Alumni Stadium, shaking off another slow start to ease past Buffalo 35-3. Courtesy of the ACC Digital Network, here are the rain-soaked highlights:

BC held Buffalo to a total of 67 yards of offense, improving the Eagles to #1 in the nation in overall defense (with the giant caveat being obviously that three of BC’s games have come against pretty poor competition). The Bulls had just 26 rushing yards, and went 1-for-11 on third down conversions.

Patrick Towles had what would be fair to call his best game of the season so far through the air, going 14-for-25 for a season high 234 yards and a pair of passing touchdowns.

Less impressive was the rushing attack, which was only able to amass 2.5 yards per carry. However, it did improve somewhat as the game went on.

All facets of BC’s game will need to be firing on all cylinders on Friday night when the Eagles welcome Clemson to the Heights.

Buffalo’s coach addresses the press

Buffalo’s coach spoke with reporters following his team’s 35-3 loss to Boston College. Transcript courtesy of BCEagles.com.

Q. I guess first off, we kind of knew that the defense was going to be really good for Boston College and it was going to be a struggle to get things going offensively, but are you surprised how much the offense struggled today?

"Yeah, yeah, I was. They're a physical group and you could see reacted real well, come downhill. Never had any semblance of any type of sustained drive or movement, so that's disappointing."

Q. What were you thinking going in to try to attack them? Were you hoping to get some quick things on the perimeter like screens?

"Yeah. You know, you could see that some of the quick throws out to the perimeter how fast they rallied, just missed a couple blocks on the perimeter, we were trying to mix it up and trying to take some shots, as well, and never fully -- when you're not getting 1st downs it's hard to gain any semblance of any momentum of a drive and to get rid of it play calling. It's frustrating all the way around."

Q. How about Jordan Johnson, the inside zone play?

"What -- I'm not sure what you're asking."

Q. Why weren't you able to run the ball on them?

"Physical group up front, get movement. I'd have to look at the film to say what exactly. We lost Tyler O'Henly Wednesday in practice to a concussion. We have a true freshman rotating in there, a right tackle who's a senior who's never started a game. He's only played two years of offense, never started a game. The other guy rotated in as a freshman. I can't say -- it's not an excuse, it's fact. You know, getting consistent movement was highly evident."

Q. Tyree didn't really try the read option keeper. Were they staying home at end or did you tell him going in that it wasn't probably going to be there?

"Yeah, we had pure option in, too, and with the conditions we just felt it's not something we live and die by, so that got eliminated off the play chart pretty quickly. Then there's some things there that they might have missed one or something, I heard Andy talking about it, but I can't say every one -- these are conversations I'll kind of flip back over. I don't know what he saw. He ran it three times, so again, credit them. They're a top-10 defense in the country, and I think we saw that."

Q. Schreck is a good weapon for you, Milano is sort of their star linebacker, 28. Didn't seem like he was giving him any separation. What did you see from the linebacking corps?

"Actually improved, confident, and you could see the experience and the speed they play on a weekly basis. You know, their ability to read, react and get downhill. Didn't get off press conference as well as I'd hoped. We wanted to take some shots, but some of the double move stuff we had, Tyree got hit on the throws, so it kind of snowballs on you, unfortunately."

Q. Just 16 points in the first half in four games so far combined; how do you get off to a better start going forward, because that's obviously an issue?

"Yeah, it's kind of been our nemesis for a while, and we've talked about it in fall camp, we've talked about it in different ways. We've changed practice to try to get into 11-on-11 stuff like we would coming out in a game. It's something we've got to get better at, and we've got to keep exploration all options."

Q. Starting MAC play, looking forward to getting that started now, because it's kind of a clean slate, right?"

Yeah, that's what we talked about in the locker room is that we win this game today, we'd be all excited, but we'd still be starting MAC play next week, and it's 0-0 in the conference, and that's where you're going to battle for, where we're at right now. It's unfortunate we couldn't have found a way to build off momentum of last week, but I'm confident in this group, their willingness to be coached, take accountability from what's not correct and work at it. And that's the thing, even at the end there, the last drive, we had a lot of guys in the game that had never played before. Jake Ames is in there, Matt Otwinowski is a true freshman playing quite a bit today, Dev Lamour made his first appearance of the season, been hurt for over a month. We had some guys out there, and I thought we continued to play hard, just not obviously the result we needed."

Q. What did you think of your front seven against their run game?

"Yeah, I haven't looked at the stats yet. I probably should have. I thought it was solid. Just off the start, there's a few things that bounced or they did some things -- late in the game they tried to spread us out I think a little bit and tried to get some things, but for the first three quarters I thought we held in there pretty good, got in some 4th down situations. Again, I still think our defensive line and really front seven is a solid group. If we keep them healthy, we'll see how they carry us on into conference play." "Obviously at this point and as we work to get better, our defense is going to be one of the things that will be able to carry us a little bit more as we look for consistency on offense."

The Head Coach speaks following BC’s win at Alumni Stadium

Boston College head coach Steve Addazio addressed the media following Boston College’s 35-3 win over Buffalo at Alumni Stadium. As always, thanks to BCEagles.com for providing the transcript.

Opening Statement

"I thought it was a dominating performance. The defense held them to 67 total yards, the offense had 400 yards of offense, had 43 minutes of time of possession on offense, 43 minutes. Five for five in the red zone, all touchdowns."

"Obviously disappointed in the 60-yard field position swing on the punt return. For the second week in a row, the guys worked too hard, our players worked too hard on special teams. Can't make bad decisions that are going to result in 60-yard field position swings."

"Guys giving great effort, guys out there going hard. We had that one series where we had a fumble and a sack, we got the ball in the short field, held them to a field goal, but totally dominating performance today. We had 16 minutes of time of possession for the game, 67 yards."

"We need to play cleaner, smarter. We've got a few mistakes that we've got to clean up that really seemed to cost us chunks of yards, which we've got to work on, but it's great to get a win, to go out and do what you need to do and get ready to get back into conference play."

“Offensively you wound up with some nice numbers, but the first three drives, really slow start. Just what clicked as the first quarter wound down, and what caused the slow start?

"We've been slow starting a lot. And when you play in tough environments, slow starts are really going to cost you. They're breakdowns up front, and it just seemed like with our young guys, it takes a while to kind of get in a groove a little bit, and it's kind of a simplistic thing to say, but it seems like that's really what happens. It's almost like they have to play to get a feel for what's happening in front of them."

"You know, but we've got to change that. We've got to fix that. Just a couple guys, it's like -- it's just a guy here and there getting cut free to be honest with you, and it creates negative yardage plays. You know, we have all the talent, we're young, and we just make those mistakes and we've got to keep grinding through it and get better, and hopefully little by little we're going to squeeze that out."

On throwing the ball despite the tough weather conditions

"We wanted to throw the ball, yeah. I said that earlier in the week that we wanted to throw the ball, even with the conditions. We probably would have liked to have thrown it more to be honest with you. We wanted to throw the ball today, and we just feel like that was another step. We wanted more balance this week. Last week we really wanted to work on the run game. The run game today still felt a little herky-jerky to be honest with you. It's these guys that were cutting free here and there that don't -- I mean, it's just ridiculous, and they're disrupting our flow running the football."

"But this is all part of it, and we've got to just keep growing. Those five guys up front, it takes a while to build them now. It just takes a while. It'll get better as we go."

Assessment of Patrick Towles’ play

Well, he had a couple turnovers that weren't his fault. Those were guys hitting him from the backside on sacks that were just ridiculous. I thought he played well. He makes a couple of great plays with his feet in every game. He throws the ball well, floated a couple early balls, but we didn't help him, right. That's the other piece of it early on offense; we dropped some balls. I don't know how many. I want to say we had somewhere between three and five real drops out there that didn't need to be dropped. They were good balls."

"So you know, I think he's playing well. I think he competes well. He has a real good understanding -- every week he feels more and more comfortable with exactly what we're doing, has more and more command of what we're doing. We've got to -- we have these young spots that seem to pop up now and then again and again. For example, our wide receivers, we feel like we're pretty talented out there, but we're really youthful and we make some silly mistakes, and they pop up, they show up, just like up front when we're going as fast as we can to squeeze those out of there which would give us a much more consistent performance."

"We're really not far off. Aside from one game, we really could have a lot of yards right now. You know, this is all -- this is a reflection of where we are with the youth of our team on offense. In that offensive rotation, we have 10 or 11 freshmen and sophomores in there playing. We've got to get this line firing more consistently. At times you see it and at times you don't."

Thoughts on where the team is at after week 5.

"Well, I'm seeing improvements each week in special teams. I really like our special teams play. Obviously given the obvious in the block in the back, right? But I like that. I like where we're headed in our throw game. I think defensively we're playing really, really strong right now."

"We have got to squeeze out the very obvious mental errors that are disrupting us right now because we won't get away with it against a team like Clemson, which is an understatement. And we've got to play -- we've got to really let it go here this week, and that's what we've been working towards, having the opportunity to really have some -- be able to do kind of what we do as a base but be able to have some game plan things that we feel can create explosions, and that's the challenge that we're at right now."

"You know, we went back to basics the last couple weeks and tried to keep things pretty simple and see if we could do that better, which we have. We took -- we stepped out against Virginia Tech and that was a total disaster, so we've got to make sure now are we ready to take another step here, because we have to, to be able to put more things in, if you will, so that we can become more explosive. You've got to create explosions. That's the name of the game in football right now, explosions. You've got to be able to get explosions, and on defense you've got to prevent those from happening."

"I think on defense we're doing a lot of things right now. We have the ability to play some base defense, which allows you not to constantly be in man coverage stress."

On Garrison’s injury

I don't have any idea yet. I literally came from the locker room to here, so I don't know any of the details there. So I don't want to speculate on that right now." "But Christian has really become an integral part of what we do, so all we can do is say a prayer and hope for the best here, right? I don't know that information right now. But he's an integral part of our attack. We got a little sideways and he got hurt and we had to readjust a lot of things we wanted to do because he's in those packages."

Would you consider the special teams penalties, I think all three of them that were called back, would you consider using more experience on special teams if you had to?

"It's a catch-22. I mean, I really feel like we've got to develop these young guys, and you've got to invest in them, and we're hoping that's what we've been doing last week and this week is investing and that we learn, because we have a lot of veteran guys out there, but they get passed. There's a lot of running there, so you're trying to strike that balance, and we really like some of these freshmen a lot, and I think they're going to be really good football players. So I think we've got to live with some of this until we can kind of grow through it a little bit, and I think it'll pay dividends for us. You know, that's kind of where we are right now."

Q. At 3-2 and with five ACC games in a row coming up, how do you like where you are in the season overall big picture?

"Well, you know, we'd certainly like to be 4-1 right now, okay. But we are where we are, and we're improving. We're starting to watch the blossoming of these guys that we're talking about week in and week out right now. Obviously we'd like it to be more consistent, but in the same breath you see the formation of what's going to be a really good group of young guys, and that usually equates over time to real productivity."

"So you know, we get ready to go in ACC play right now, and we're going to go from -- we've been a little bit in the land of extremes, so what I want to see us do is come out on Friday night and play with a lot of intensity, a lot of confidence, and we've done that here in the past, and we're going to do it again. I want to see us take the next step as a team with great effort, and I want to see some execution against a really obviously top-10 opponent." "I would tell you that it's my opinion that we're in the toughest conference in the country right now, and I think I'm pretty qualified because I've been in all of them, and I've been in some of them when they've been the best they've ever been, okay."

"Our conference right now is tough, really, really tough, and we're in that division that's obviously the side of our conference that's the toughest that there is. We're playing three teams that are top-10, top-15 teams, and I think four really when you count Virginia Tech in there, because I think they are, you know, so our permanent crossover and three on our side. We're in a tough side of that division, and it's going to make us -- we're going to get better from it, and we're going to grow, and we're looking forward to it. Our kids are jacked up down there right now, jacked up to get back to work and go, simple as that."

Q. While taking on the best quarterback in the conference, maybe in all of college football, for a game like this, is there pressure for you to be more aggressive on offense, to do more trick plays, to be more outside of your comfort zone, because you're a guy who likes to pound the ball, use defense and make it a slow game?

"Well, as I said earlier, that's what I said, yes. I think we do need to create more explosives. I'm a guy that likes to see productivity, okay, and I've said that since I've been here. We came in here in year one; we had the runner-up Heisman Trophy running back with a big offensive line. We had one receiver. We pounded the ball, and we were very productive doing that. Year two, we had a quarterback here that was a spread option, and we mixed it with some power run game, okay. That's what we did because that's what the talent dictated."

"Year three, I mean, I don't know what to tell you, it never materialized. We went through all those quarterbacks, we lost our starter, that's yet to know." "Now we come in here, and what we're trying to do, you can see what we're trying to do; we're trying to become a much more balanced team that has a really good play action game and is a much more balanced throw. And yes, we would like to build more explosives through different styles of plays, but when we try -- even though I know it didn't look like it, it didn't look like it to me, either, okay, but we went down to Virginia Tech and that a little backfired on us. We were too young, we couldn't handle it and we became not good at anything to be honest with you, okay."

"And that happens sometimes when you're young and you go on the road in an environment like that. I just saw it happen to Stanford against Washington last night. You know, when you're in a pro-style offense, you'd like to have a leathered-up, mature offensive line. We're not quite there yet."

"Long answer is to tell you yes, we will and we do need to create more explosives. And to think that we're going to sit here and ground and pound Clemson, that would be great that happens, and you know what, if that happens, we'll ground and pound and ground and pound and ground and pound, but we're not going to go in thinking that we're going to be able to just do that. That would not be a great plan."

"Our object is to create balance, and that's what I think we've done differently. Year one was different from year two, year two to three, year three, who can measure, and now what we're trying to do is build balance, and I think you see that."

"So I think you can follow the plan here a little bit. It's not that hard. Our consistency is not where it needs to be right now. That's just the fact. What does that mean? Whether it's penalties, whether it's some missed blocks, whether it's this or that, if we had that right now, quite frankly we'd be pretty explosive right now, okay. We really would be, and you'd be in here five games in at 4-1, okay. Playing, by the way, some good opponents along the way, okay."

"We're getting there. We're getting there. We're going to face a buzz saw this week, so we're going to have to play at our top level, period end."

Sure, they weren't playing the '85 Bears, but the Eagles did what they had to do Saturday.

Say what you will about the opponent, but Boston College won a must-win game today, and did so emphatically, topping Buffalo 35-3 at Alumni Stadium.

There were few fans to speak of (though the announced attendance was 24,203), but the ones that braved rainy conditions were treated to some all around dominant play from the end of the first quarter until halftime. During that span, the Eagles (3-2, 0-2 ACC) scored 21 points, and had four different passing plays of over 20 yards, and a pair of absolutely perfectly placed touchdown throws from quarterback Patrick Towles.

Were the Eagles perfect? Far from it, but BC showed it could move the ball through the air, as Towles threw for 234 yards to go with those two scores, on 14-25 passing with zero interceptions.

After dominating on the ground against Wagner, another overmatched foe, last week, it was great to see Towles find some rhythm, and hit six different receivers while the game was still in the balance. He also showed his trademark scrambling ability, escaping the pocket to pick up two first downs with his legs.

"We wanted to throw the ball today," Boston College coach Steve Addazio said. "We feel like that was another step... We wanted more balance."

The defense was dominant throughout, imposing its will up front against the run, and in coverage, as both Isaac Yiadom and Kamrin Moore blanketed their men all day. BC forced a pair of Bulls turnovers (both fumbles), and held Buffalo to just 67 yards of offense. This is what good defenses do against mid-major teams.

With back-to-back blowout wins over lower-level opponents, Boston College has done what it can to erase the stink of that 49-0 defeat in Blacksburg a few weeks ago.

The schedule gets much tougher from here, but the Eagles can head into next week knowing they've done what they can to keep their bowl hopes alive.

For all the complaining about playing teams like Wagner and Buffalo back-to-back, at least the team came out and left no doubt on the field. The kids don't make the schedule, they just play it, and for two weeks at least, they've played it as well as anybody could have hoped for.

Next Friday brings BC's greatest challenge yet in the form of nationally ranked Clemson, and the Eagles believe they have gotten better the last two weeks.

How much better?

We'll find out Friday night.

BC made short work of the Bulls Saturday

On a dreary afternoon inside Alumni Stadium, Boston College took care of business, cruising to a 35-3 victory over MAC foe Buffalo.

The Eagles (3-2, 0-2 ACC) got on the board near the end of the 1st quarter. Patrick Towles hit Chris Garrison for a 44-yard gain to set the Eagles up with great field position, but, the big play would come at a cost. Garrison couldn't get up after the play, and was later announced to have suffered a broken tibia in his left leg.

BC would take advantage of the gain moments later though, when Davon Jones scored his first career touchdown on a pitch off the left side.

Towles would continue his stellar afternoon, hitting Charlie Callinan in the back of the end zone for a score early in the second, then he found Michael Walker with a perfectly thrown ball just before intermission to give the Eagles a 21-3 half time lead.

Towles finished the afternoon 14-25 passing for 234 yards and two scores, with no interceptions.

The Eagle offense would sputter in the third, as a long drive resulted in no points early in the period, then Towles lost a fumble to squander starting field position on the Buffalo side of the 50.

The Eagle defense would make up for any offensive hiccups, forcing a pair of turnovers of their own, and holding Buffalo to just 67 yards of total offense.

BC would bounce back offensively early in the fourth to put the game out of reach, as Jon Hilliman broke off a pair of long runs for first downs, then put an exclamation point in the drive, with a powerful one-yard touchdown run.

The Eagles now begin preparation for national ranked Clemson, who will make the trip to Chestnut Hill next Friday night at 7:30 pm.

BC is one quarter away from victory

Just when it looked like the Eagles were going to blow Buffalo out, the offense couldn't get out of its own way.

Another Patrick Towles fumble on a sack gave the ball away near the end of the third period, so we head to the fourth with the Eagles still leading 21-3.

The Eagles actually had a promising drive that made its way into Bulls territory, but BC had to punt. Luckily, the defense is still playing very well, forcing a pair of Buffalo punts in the third.

What will BC do in the fourth? Stay with us to find out.
