Well, that's interesting.

So, here's something to chew on: this year's NCAA women's hockey final between Boston College and Minnesota, which aired one week late on tape delay Easter Sunday on CBS, drew 651,000 households. This is significantly more than any men's hockey tournament game drew over the same weekend, and also slightly more than the estimated U.S. viewership (635,000 households) of last year's BU-Providence men's national championship game on ESPN. I have not seen any sites that calculated out the number of viewers from the number of households, but a fair guess is somewhere in the neighborhood of a million viewers for each game.

While the ESPN figures for the men's tournament don't include the likely significant number of people who streamed the games on ESPN3/WatchESPN, the women's viewership figures also don't include the people who streamed the final live.

A couple major caveats right off the bat:

The women's final was aired on over-the-air CBS, whereas men's games are aired on cable (including channels like ESPNU and ESPN News which require additional packages on most providers).

Ratings for the men's final are traditionally savaged by going up against the crucial last night of the NHL season almost every year

The ratings for all of these games are not exactly blockbuster compared to other major sports however you slice them and dice them; college hockey is just not a major national TV product. The men's and women's championship game ratings are about equal to those of a good NBCSN NHL regular season game.

That said, the fact that the women's game drew such a solid number by hockey standards on tape delay says something about the ability of women's hockey to draw a crowd, at least for one-off special events.

4.9 million people watched the Olympic women's hockey final on TV, and an additional 1.2 million streamed it online - despite the fact that the game happened on a weekday afternoon. While the Olympics are obviously a special case, there's clearly a community out there interested in these games, particularly with the growth in womens' and girls' hockey programs across the country.

Hopefully this number encourages CBS - who have long sat on the TV rights but refused to sell them to a network that might air it live - to actually broadcast next year's Frozen Four, be it on CBSSN or over-the-air CBS. I think the rating, at least in year one, would surprise some people.

Despite disappointment in the final, this year was a huge step for the program

Though they came a few goals short of the national championship, this year's Boston College women's hockey season was a success on multiple fronts- meeting (and exceeding) every preseason expectation, and falling only to a program that's simply in its own world in Minnesota.

When it came down to it, 40-0 was a heavy burden to bear in the final. It will be easy for players, fans, media and anyone else to point to think of 40-1 as a disappointment or a collapse, like the 2007 Patriots, or like last year's BC women's season, which rightly was considered a disappointment as they came up short without even getting to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In reality, of course, Minnesota and Wisconsin are on another level from everyone else until proven otherwise. The Gophers have won 4 of the last 5 championships, with their dynasty only interrupted by a stunning run by Clarkson in an Olympic year, with the top teams' biggest stars out of commission due to their Olympic team commitments.

It was a tremendous accomplishment for BC to go 40-1 this season, but they never, ever get a chance to play a team on Minnesota or Wisconsin's level during the regular season, and by the sound of it, they probably never will get that chance either, until either decides to change their regular season scheduling philosophy (though with the success they're having, I get that they have no reason to do so). Harvard, Quinnipiac, Princeton, Northeastern and even Minnesota Duluth are all great programs that BC has been able to play with some regularity, but there's no comparison between any of those teams and the big two. So it's no surprise that Minnesota prevailed again in the final.

With that said, this year's season checked off every box with regard to preseason expectations:

-The Eagles completely eviscerated (admittedly weak) Hockey East competition
-BC brought back home the Beanpot, in dominating fashion
-They finally, finally put together the four strong games necessary to win the Hockey East tournament title, overcoming the hex of playing BU in the process
-And last but not least, their dramatic win over Clarkson advanced the team to uncharted territory in their first NCAA final, and ensured that they would only go out to either Minnesota or Wisconsin

While the disappointment of coming so close and falling just short will linger, that list of accomplishments is impressive. When this year's senior class walked on to the Heights, the thought of winning a national championship - let alone running rampant for an entire season - was more of a pipe dream than anything; the goal was moreso to become the East's top team and put yourself in a position where you had one shot in a do or die game against one of the big two. This year's class accomplished exactly that, and elevated BC to a point where a national title is a legitimate possibility, and where they were able to play with the Gophers for 60 minutes in a game that was pretty even for the most part.

Next year's expectation will be a little different now that Alex Carpenter, Haley Skarupa, and a boatload of other very good seniors have departed. But this year's seniors left a legacy that will keep BC in the national conversation for years to come.

Another success of this season for BC is that they opened the eyes of a number of fans in the BC community who otherwise didn't follow the program. Google and our own pageviews tell us web-search/reader interest in BC women's hockey skyrocketed this year - not just during the final, but all season long; media attention crept up slightly as the season went on; and BC fans came out in big numbers on Sunday to cheer them on in the final. Let's hope that momentum carries on in to next season, too.

Congratulations once again to BC women's hockey on the best season in program history. We're on to 2016-17.

All it took was 18 seconds, and that was all the Minnesota Gophers needed to win the 2016 National Championship ending Boston College's perfect season in the process. Sarah Potomac who won the game against Wisconsin, hit what would prove to be the game winner 18 seconds into the game.

There was lots of action, but not a lot of scoring for most of the first and second period as Boston College goalie Katie Burt and Minnesota goalie Amanda Leveille stood tall against a flurry of shots. Both goalies had 20 plus saves through two periods.

It was the third period though that proved to be the decisive frame in the National Championship Game. Former Patty Kazmaier Trophy winner Amanda Kessel slammed home a goal, followed shortly by Kelly Pannek, who put Minnesota up 3-0. BC showed some life though as Makenna Newkirk scored the Eagles lone goal.

Congratulations to the Eagles on a hard fought season. We will have more coverage on today's game later. Be sure to check out BCI for all your women's hockey coverage.

Storyline: 40-0-0 means nothing for Boston College women's hockey. The only thing that matters is this one game - the one crack we've been hoping for all year at one of the WCHA's elite. Barring a collapse, this season was always going to come down to a battle between BC and either Minnesota or Wisconsin. Now, it's finally here, and BC has one more dragon to slay if they're going to complete the season of their dreams. Let's drop the puck.

This is it.

It had to be Minnesota.

As the reigning titan of women's hockey, it's only fitting that to win their first national championship, the Eagles will have to go through the defending national champion and the only team in the NCAA era to complete a perfect season.

It's not often that a team holding a 40-0-0 record will go into its last game feeling like the underdog, but that's where BC sits right now. The Gophers are the ones wearing the crown, and until that point that the Eagles can take it from them, they are the favorite.

Minnesota has four losses, but three of them came to Wisconsin. If BC had to play either of those teams six times, as the Gophers and Badgers did this year, there's no way the Eagles would be undefeated. But this isn't a six game series, and the Eagles don't need to worry about going undefeated. BC's season has come down to winning just a single game.

Last Time Out

Boston College won the biggest game in program history, coming back from being down 2-0, tying the game in the third period, and defeating Clarkson 3-2 in overtime.

Minnesota won probably the 15th biggest game in program history, also earning a comeback win, also tying the game in the third period, defeating Wisconsin also 3-2, also in overtime.

Big Questions

Did the overtime win over Clarkson take too much out of the Eagles emotionally? Did the overtime win over Wisconsin take too much out of the Gophers emotionally? Can BC play fast and loose again after getting bottled up against Clarkson? Will we find that one team just can't keep up with the other in what is expected to be a raucous, up and down thriller? Can BC stay out of the penalty box and avoid Minnesota's insane 43.4% power play? Can the Eagles find the magic again on the power play, somehow still the nation's second best despite their season-worst streak of 17 unsuccessful power plays? Is this whole exercise unhealthy? Am I shortening my life by watching this game? Can you get an ulcer in under two hours? Should I bring some heartburn medication?

Random, Possibly Incorrect Fact From Minnesota's Wikipedia Page

The University of Minnesota created "Gopher," an early predecessor of the World Wide Web, which was eventually overtaken by HTTP as the dominant protocol of the internet.

So that's something.

Random, Definitely Correct Fact From My Own Experience Traveling To Minneapolis

The Mall of America is really big[citation needed]. It is so big that, at least as of my last visit to the mall, it has three (3) separate and distinct Champs Sports stores.

Also they call their soda "pop" which everyone knows is not correct but they insist on doing it anyway.

Game Day Beverage

Pepto-Bismol

Because oh my God in heaven do I already feel nauseous.

Gametime Song of the Week

For Boston

There are any number of ultra-sappy, ulta-dumb, and ultimately ultra-meaningly choices I could have made for this. So I ditched them all. Boston College Women's Hockey is playing to bring the first non-men's hockey NCAA title to the Heights. There's no other motivational theme necessary.

Final Prediction

No staff predictions this week. Just me.

I am personally overwhelmed with the fact that BC is playing in this game. They looked dead in the water yesterday and clawed back, with the help of a miracle goal or two, to keep their season alive in overtime. There's the feeling that there's a decent chance of a letdown game. It feels like too much to ask to get such a cathartic moment like the semifinal overtime winner to send us to our first final and to win the national title both in the same weekend.

But Minnesota's got the same opportunity for a letdown. They had the same third period, come-from-behind, 3-2 overtime thriller to get here, but their matchup was a breathless wide-open affair against their hated rival, Wisconsin.

BC caught a break in getting to play the Gophers. Their up-and-down style suits BC well and the Eagles have never lost to the Gophers by more than one goal -- never, in the five games ever played between these two programs. The only time the Eagles were ranked above the Gophers (albeit on a Pairwise technicality and even then BC was still really the underdog), BC smoked Minnesota 4-0 in the first period and never looked back.

That's obviously not going to happen, but the fact is, even when the Eagles have been severely outclassed on paper, BC has found that the Gophers' style matches up well with theirs.

I don't know whether BC will pull this game out, but a literal virtual coin flip on random.org gave BC the win. So write it down: BC 3, Minnesota 2, possibly (God help me) in overtime, for a national championship.

It all comes down to one game - and BC will need to beat the King Kong of women's hockey to do it

It takes special circumstances for a team to be 40-0-0, but the team they're playing against is Goliath. These are such circumstances.

The Boston College women's hockey team survived and advanced past #5 Clarkson on Friday to qualify for their first ever national championship game. If Alex Carpenter, Haley Skarupa and company are going to get to the promised land and and put a star on the back of their jerseys, they're going to need to do it by toppling the King Kong of women's hockey, the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Gophers, the defending national champions, are appearing in their fourth straight national final after edging arch rival Wisconsin in OT on Friday. Bolstered by the return of superstar Amanda Kessel, Minnesota has no reason to fear being the "lower seed."

Will BC complete a magical season, or will Minnesota trip them up? It's time to find out. The game we've anticipated all year is here.

Game Time: Faceoff is at 2:00 PM.

Radio Info: The Boston College IMG Sports Radio Network will broadcast the game on 1120 AM WBNW, with play by play by veteran BC hockey announcer Tom Grace. The radio broadcast will also stream on BCEagles.TV and the TuneIn Radio App (search Boston College Radio Network).

Storyline: What else is there to say? It's the Eagles and the Gophers with the national title on the line. This should be a high-octane, fun affair, though maybe a bit too stressful if you're a fan of one of the teams involved. The WCHA has won 14 of 15 all-time NCAA women's hockey titles, while Hockey East is looking for its first. Can BC be the ones to do it?
