#JY1K!

With tonight's road win over the UMass Minutemen, Boston College Hockey Head Coach Jerry York has reached coaching immortality.

Coach York overtook former Michigan State head coach Ron Mason a few years back with his 925th career win, but today's victory was even more special. After already leading the pack as the all-time wins leader, Coach York earned his 1,000th career win, becoming the first and only coach to ever reach that milestone.

No active coach is even close to Coach York's win total. Coming into tonight, Michigan coach Red Berenson was second among active coaches with 824 wins—so he's got a long, long way to go to catch Jerry York.

Everyone knew win number 1,000 was coming, but the anticipation just made it more exciting. With a tough start to the second half, BC couldn't quite come through with enough wins to reach the milestone at home or down the road at Agganis Arena, but a ride down the Mass Pike worked just as well.

Congratulations to Coach York, and here's hoping for another 1,000 wins before he retires in 2116!

Storyline: Jerry York will never want the focus of any game to be about him, but it's unavoidable tonight as BC travels to Amherst to take on a struggling UMass Amherst team with York sitting on 999 career victories. UMass has lost 10 of their last 11 games and BC will be hoping to extend their misery tonight.

After two weekends against top teams in HEA, BC now battles two lower half teams

Despite a strong weekend against BU, one major thing was left undone: #JY1K. Coach York's 1000th win continues to loom as an impending milestone and the Eagles will surely want to pick up a W tonight and get that potential distraction in to the rear view mirror as we approach the season's stretch run. They'll have a great opportunity to do just that tonight in Amherst when the Eagles take on the UMass Minutemen, who are 1-10-0 in their last 11 games. On Saturday night BC returns home to take on UConn, a team that started off ice cold but has shown improvement in recent weeks.

Previewing tonight's game

The dean of Hockey East blogging, the oft imitated and never duplicated Fear the Triangle, took the time to chat with BC Interruption about his UMass Minutemen in preparation for tonight's game.

1. You came out this week and called for the firing of coach Micheletto. Was there a last straw that made you come to this conclusion?

FTT>> Yes and no. I've had concerns about his ability to lead the program from early on. He was handed a talented (though not overly deep) roster that included NHLers Conor Allen and Conor Sheary as well as some other skilled players like Joel Hanley and Mike Pereira. But instead of trying to make the most with what he had, he instead tried to institute an insane system that pretty much abandons any semblance of defense. Those guys would end up making big contributions (Sheary and Pereira are in the top 10 in all time points at UMass) but the team would lose by pretty big margins. Fans were told once he had "his players" for "his system," they would win. Well, he's had mostly his players for the last two years and UMass continues to find itself at or near the bottom of the Hockey East standings. The team has won just 3 of its last 18 games and was outscored 9-1 in a sweep this past weekend at the hands of Lowell and River Hawk goaltender Kevin Boyle, a player that Micheletto cut to free up his scholarship. He doesn't look any closer to turning things around than when he took over three and a half seasons ago.

2. What do you think is the best case scenario for the rest of the season and what needs to happen in order for UMass to achieve that best case scenario?

FTT>> Just to get a few more wins under their belt and hope the young players can develop despite the current negative atmosphere around the program. When the season began there were hopes that the team would at least finish with a winning record. Then when they began to struggle the hope was to finish at .500 and host a first-round series. Now the hope is just to stay out of the Hockey East basement. To do so they'll need to get healthy, though. They're currently missing three players on defense, including Oiler draft pick William Lagesson, and Dennis Kravchenko at forward. However, even when all those players were in the lineup in November and December, they still weren't playing all that well so health alone may not make the difference.

3. Who have been some of the bright spots or pleasant surprises this year for UMass?

FTT>> Without a doubt Shane Walsh has been the biggest bright spot. He had a relatively quiet career for his first two and a half seasons, but starting last January he has exploded offensively. He has 27 goals over his last 41 games. He's currently tied for 8th nationally with 15 goals scored. Because of Micheletto's system and the goals allowed it produces at first glance one would assume the team is void of talent on defense. But that's not the case. In addition to Lagesson, freshmen Ivan Chukarov and Callum Fryer have done well in their first years in Amherst, with Fyrer especially playing well in recent games in terms of his positioning and providing some physical play that the team overall has lacked. Freshman goaltender Nic Renyard is trying to become the first Minuteman goaltender with a save percentage in the .900s since Paul Dainton in 2008-09.

4. What has been the team's biggest flaw?

FTT>> Everything has been a problem at different points in time during the season. The team was scoring at a good rate when the season started in October but from Halloween onward they're scoring just 1.72 goals per game with a power play of 7.5%. They're not getting any production outside of the Walsh-Steven Iacobellis-Ray Pigozzi line. The team had a few flashes of playing decent defensively but, in what's become a Micheletto team trademark, UMass is currently dead last among Hockey East teams in goals allowed with 3.61. In the end, the biggest flaw appears to be coaching.

5. Do you think UMass will move on from Micheletto after the season if they continue to struggle? What type of profile would you be looking for in a new coach?

FTT>> It's tough to tell since he does have one year left on his contract. UMass Athletic Director Ryan Bamford only started this past Spring so he doesn't have any history regarding what prompts him to make a coaching change. I would think it would be a distinct possibility given Micheletto's .350 career win percentage, the dwindling crowds at the Mullins Center, and the increasingly louder calls for his head from the remaining fans and boosters. I would like the school to bring in a coach who has proven success as a head coach (think Nate Leaman with Providence) or a top assistant at a high level program (Cavanaugh with UConn). They could even reach into the pro assistant ranks like Boston University did. No matter who is selected I think it's important that the new coach immerse himself into the UMass community. Micheletto has never made much of an effort to engage the fanbase or the Amherst community and that has exacerbated the problems with attendance, fundraising, and sponsorships. Building a successful college hockey program is more than just assembling a team of players.

6. Any predictions for UMass's two games this weekend?

FTT>> It's tough to expect UMass to be competitive against BC on Friday considering how the Eagles thrashed the Minutemen 7-0 back when UMass was playing much better hockey in early November. I just hope not to see a 3-on-0 "Flying V" breakaway this time. I'm not sure what to expect against Vermont. UMass played them tough earlier in the season, coming back late to secure a tie up in Burlington. And the Cats are coming off a poor showing against Providence at home. But Micheletto is winless in his last 6 games against his former team, so I'm not overly optimistic.

.......

UMass and UConn are on the docket for the Eagles

Two white-knuckle weekends against Providence and Boston University have come to a successful conclusion for the Eagles, with BC regaining their footing and moving up into the top 10 in the pairwise rankings after taking 6 of 8 possible points. The focus now shifts to a pair of games BC will be expected to win: Friday night at UMass, and Saturday night at home vs. UConn.

The Eagles' two opponents this weekend are examples of programs heading in opposite directions.

In 2002-03, the UMass Minutemen put together their first winning season since joining Hockey East, and it looked like Toot Cahoon would have UMass climbing the ranks of the league. Their successful run peaked in 2006-07 when Jonathan Quick backstopped the Minutemen to an appearance in the NCAA tournament and a 21-13-5 record. Hockey East observers had long speculated that Massachusetts' flagship state university would be able to compete and succeed in a sport with so much homegrown talent, and it looked like it was finally happening.

UMass had a few decent seasons after Quick left and continued to be one of the highest-drawing teams in the league over the next few years, but they were never able to put it all together and make another tournament run. After fading down the stretch and missing the tournament in 2010 (thanks in part to BC's demolition of UMass in the Operation 8000 game), the bottom fell out for Cahoon, and two horrible seasons saw his run at UMass come to an end.

That's when things got very, very frustrating for UMass fans. Cahoon's departure came amid rumors of his consternation with lack of institutional support for the men's hockey program, at a school where basketball reigns supreme and where the University recently sunk millions of dollars and countless man hours into a quixotic effort at going D1A in football. UMass's first two attempts to replace Cahoon ended in egg in the face for the program.

Depending on who you believe, they were either close to landing Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold, or Pecknold was merely playing them to get more money out of Quinnipiac. Either way, what would have been a splash hire for UMass ended in frustration as UMass's offer to Pecknold was followed by Quinnipiac offering him a raise and retaining his services. Pecknold took Quinnipiac to the national title game in 2013 and has them atop the national rankings this year. UMass also approached Paul Pearl, head coach of Holy Cross, who turned them down and decided instead to make his next career move becoming the associate head coach at Harvard.

Mike Cavanaugh was one of a series of untested options available when UMass finally did settle on a third choice candidate, going with Vermont associate coach John Micheletto. In year 4 under Micheletto, UMass continues to be stuck in the muck. They've won 9, 4, and 11 games in his first three seasons. Their 7-12-4 record as of now this year is probably a bit flattering and they're stuck in a tough skid right now. The always levelheaded and reliable Fear the Triangle, the voice of UMass hockey fandom on the 'net, is now calling for Micheletto's job, and he's not alone.

With BC and BU gobbling up the most elite local talent, with Notre Dame being Notre Dame, and with UMass-Lowell and Providence recently making home run hires in their last coaching searches, UMass is in an unenviable position of having to climb past a number of well-positioned programs if they're to become relevant again in Hockey East—not unlike the situation BC finds itself in in basketball. Another problem they face now is the emergence of UConn.

I was skeptical of how the UConn hockey experience would go, but in their first year in Hockey East, they burst on to the scene, leading the league in attendance at the XL Center and picking up several signature wins en route to a decent season. Mike Cavanaugh moved over to UConn after a long and successful tenure as Jerry York's right hand man prior to UConn's last season in Atlantic Hockey, winning 18 games. A 10-19-7 mark last year in their HEA debut was not bad (better, in fact, than UMass or Maine) and they currently sit sixth in Hockey East at 8-13-2.

In addition to playing competitive hockey on the ice, UConn is also recruiting well. They've snatched a few USNTDP prospects and also landed a late BU decommit, Max Letunov, who leads the Huskies in points with 25 in 23 games.

It helps for UConn that they have a "brand name" athletic program, something UNH, Maine and UMass can't really match. But what's also helped is the institutional support of both the school and the fanbase. It was pretty clear from day one that they were taking hockey seriously and have hopes of making it a big part of their athletic program. You haven't really gotten that same sense out of UMass in a long time. If UConn successfully pulls the trigger on building a modern, on-campus hockey facility, they could easily become a serious national player.

The Huskies also made the right coaching hire, capitalizing on a mistake that quite frankly a number of programs made over the years passing on Cavanaugh. One wonders where Northeastern might be now if they had hired Cav in 2011, the year they went with Jim Madigan while UMass Lowell and Providence landed Norm Bazin and Nate Leaman.

UConn is now making the path to the top even more difficult for programs like UMass and Northeastern, who have long struggled in the shadow of BC and BU. While things can change rapidly in college hockey, it certainly feels like UConn is a lot closer to being a tournament team than UMass is.

The Eagles will get a firsthand look at both teams this weekend: they play at Amherst on Friday night, then host UConn on Saturday. The BC-UConn game is expected to fetch a sellout crowd.
