It’s a rout. BC dominates Syracuse in the Carrier Dome 58-27. The Eagles posted a school record 691 yards of total offense, led by a ferocious rushing attack. With 35 carries, 242 yards, and three touchdowns, AJ Dillon extends his school touchdown record. Not to be outmatched, David Bailey tallied his own 172 and two touchdown performance.

Big play after big play, the Eagles tormented the Syracuse defense. Both backs busted open for long runs and simply overpowered the Orange defense. Boston College ended with 496 rushing yards.

The Eagles did themselves no favors early on with fumbles on back to back possessions. The team hadn’t had many turnovers up until this point, but those two first quarter fumbles allowed Syracuse to take an early lead entering the second quarter.

From there, it was all BC. The Eagles didn’t need much from their young quarterback in the end, but Dennis Grosel opened the second quarter with a deep play-action shot to Kobay White. He followed that up on his very next possession with another deep pass this time to Zay Flowers.

Grosel only threw 10 passes for 195 yards, but that and his three touchdown passes was everything BC could have asked for. His final touchdown pass to Isaiah Miranda to end the first half put the Eagles up 44-20.

The second half was largely BC continuing to pound the rock, and Syracuse failing to stop them. The Orangemen couldn’t generate much on offense either, and the Eagles comfortably took home the game.

The Eagle defense for all their hardships throughout the year, made timely plays throughout the contest. Whether it was holding Syracuse to a field goal here, or getting a stop on fourth down there, they kept the Eagle offense in the game early on, when the door easily could have blown open. Syracuse was held to 5-17 on third down and 2-5 on fourth down. Brandon Barlow notched two sacks, and Max Richardson and TJ Rayam combined for some key tackles for losses. Nolan Borgersen came on for an injured Mike Palmer, and did well enough to make a case for the starting job even if Palmer is healthy.

The Eagles will need to check on the health of a few others starters who limped off the field in Hunter Long and Medhi El-Attrach.

Next up for BC is Florida State next Saturday. It will be the final home game of the season for the Eagles and will also be the red bandana game. With 5 wins and three games remaining, BC will hope to pick up bowl eligibility once again.

The Eagles head to Upstate New York to take on the Syracuse Orangemen on Saturday. Yes, you read that correctly, and no, it is NOT Thanksgiving, but feel free to eat as though it is. BC has the good fortune of playing this game off another bye week. Yes, you also read that correctly. Syracuse (3-5), meanwhile, has lost three straight games, at NC State, home to Pitt, and at Florida State last week.

BC won the last meeting at the Carrier Dome in 2017 in dominating fashion, but the results in the Addazio-era have been bleh. He is 2-4, with three one score losses and two not-even-close wins.

The State of the Rivalry ft. John Cassillo

For some reason, people like asking for our opinions, and so we’ve just asked for some thoughts in return. Thanks to John Cassillo, the managing editor from Syracuse’s SB Nation blog “Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician” for his take on the BC-Syracuse “rivalry” and tomorrow’s big game. Be sure to check out his Q&A with us on their site, where I compare the rivalry to two exes who can’t seem to find anyone better.

This game’s a rivalry -- the primary rivalry for both teams -- because they don’t have other options, really, and college football is at least partially dependent on having opponents that mutually dislike one another. The typical timing of this game prevents it from becoming a bigger deal for students, since they’re not on campus when it occurs. So in the instances when it’s mid-season, it can’t just manufacture animosity. It would work if we were two nearby state schools, but we’re not, so we deal with what we have.

I know that SU beating BC more often than not is a sticking point for those that want Steve Addazio gone, and I don’t blame them. Would probably feel the same way at SU if a coach struggled to beat an in-conference and recruiting rival more than once every three tries. That’s not a dig. Just empathizing with the situation, and agreeing with the negative feelings.

As far as this specific game goes, I’m oddly hopeful that Syracuse can slow down A.J. Dillon enough without much of a passing attack to worry about, and the offensive line provides enough protection to make the offense look less downtrodden than it has in recent weeks. That won’t mean a resounding win, but I think (perhaps against my better judgement) that the Orange get the job done at home, 34-30.

What to Watch for:

I think there are a few intriguing match-ups to watch out for. The Syracuse offensive line vs. our defensive line is the first. Syracuse ranks dead last in the nation in sacks allowed at 5.25 a game (thank you, Brian for this factual), but well BC doesn’t exactly generate many sacks themselves. The flip side of this match up is where I think BC will need to dominate to win this game. Syracuse has been pretty porous stopping the run these past few weeks especially giving up over 200 yards on the ground to Cam Akers and co. at Florida State, and over a hundred the two weeks prior. You have to love BC’s offensive line and rushing attack against them.

I hope linebacker Isaiah McDuffie can play in this game. He dressed during last week’s bye week, but didn’t end up taking the field. Given this would be his own sort of homecoming being relatively from the area and having decommitted from Syracuse, it would be great to see him see get action for the first time this season. He’ll still have two years of eligibility if he only plays in four games. Addazio seemed to hint at him being ready to play.

The Oddsmakers:

Spread: BC +3

Straight: BC+135/Syracuse-160

Over/Under: 60

How many oranges can an eagle peel in three hours?: o/u: 140

At 4-4, the Eagles desperately need to take this game for a good shot at getting a bowl game. None of these winnable games are going to be easy, so I think we can rest a little easier (everything else aside) having this game in the bank.

#orangeeagle is starting to get out of hand

After riding the bench for this particular game following wisdom teeth extraction, I shall take a crack at analyzing the Syracuse Orange and Boston College Eagles basketball game.

The Good:

Sleeping through the first half: Based on the scoreline of the first half, I determine that it was a very good thing that I slept through the majority of the half, given the fact I missed the 21-4 Syracuse run to end the half.

A below capacity attendance at the Carrier Dome: Probably a good thing that a very low amount of people saw that game.

Yeah, I got nothing else.

The Bad:

Only One Player Scoring From the Stripe: It didn't help matters that only Dennis Clifford and A.J. Turner made it to the stripe. Yet, Dennis Clifford barely went above .500 from the stripe (4-7) and Turner didn't make any of his free throws. Gotta find some way to get to the stripe, and to actually score.

Trouble with shot clock awareness: There was one play where the Eagles were just galavanting along the perimeter (something they did a lot, but I'll get to that in a second), with complete reckless disregard for the shot clock. Naturally, with that disregard, Daryl Hicks was forced to put a prayer that had absolutely no shot at going in as the shot clock was expiring. That isn't the first time this season that the Eagles have shown blatant disregard for the red numbers at the top of the basket. They need to do better.

Points Off Turnovers: 'Cuse had 22 points off BC turnovers. Is that bad? I think that's bad.

The Ugly:

Inability to Do Anything Inside: BC just seemed unable to crack the patented Syracuse zone all night. The Eagles could not penetrate, which meant that BC was unable to get inside the arc. That's usually bad, but what made things worse was that the Eagles were not able to get anything serious going from behind the arc. Going 23.1% from behind the arc when you are having that much trouble penetrating is simply inexcusable.

Eli Carter being the only player in double digits: Eli Carter is the straw that stirs the drink offensively, so it is not a surprise that he would lead the team in scoring. Yet, the fact that Carter was the only one to reach double digits is simply inexcusable. Jerome Robinson had an abysmal two points. A.J. Turner had four, Clifford had four (though if they weren't penetrating what do you expect?). Simply put, offensively, this game was absolutely pitiful.

The very realistic possibility that BC goes 0-for in major ACC sports: It's a little bit early to start throwing dirt on the grave of BC basketball's season. But with a performance that pitiful against a Syracuse team that was very much on the ropes, it is not unreasonable at this point to start asking oneself if the Eagles are going to go 0-for. We all know that football season was a struggle, with all of the injuries and everything. We also know that this was going to be a Trust the Process type of season for basketball. Yet, it has to leave a bad taste in one's mouth that BC is this pitiful in revenue sports this year.
I don't pretend to know what the answers are. I do know that someone somewhere needs to come up with something, because the fanbase has been decimated, and going 0-for this year will only make things worse.

To the extent that such things exist

Boston College proved to be a useful slumpbuster for the Syracuse Orange, slumping to a brutal 62-40 loss at the Carrier Dome. BC's offense proved to be completely incapable of doing just about anything other than hitting the occasional three pointer, with absolutely nothing going on on the inside for the entirety of the game.

Syracuse struggled early but pulled away comfortably down the stretch, earning their first ACC win of the year. Syracuse is now 11-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play. BC falls to 0-3 in the league and 7-9 overall. As tends to be the case in ACC basketball, the road ahead gets only tougher. BC's next game comes Saturday afternoon at #20-ranked, 14-1 Pittsburgh. If the Eagles are going to snap their losing streak and pick up an ACC win, they're going to need a wholesale turnaround from what happened last night in western New York.

BC fails to break the Syracuse zone, heads back to the drawing board after blowout loss at Carrier Dome.

Three Syracuse Orange scored double figures, and the Boston College offense sputtered for two incredibly long stretches as the Eagles dropped a 62-40 decision on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome in Western New York.

The loss drops the Eagles to 7-9 overall, 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Orange picked up their first league win while improving to 11-7 overall.

Eli Carter hit back-to-back three pointers to open up the game, giving the Eagles an early 6-4 lead before falling behind, 12-8. But they failed to capitalize on a three-minute stretch when the Syracuse offense went cold, giving the Orange a chance to figure things out and pull away. At the same time, BC failed to hit a field goal for over 10 minutes in the first half, falling behind by 15 at the end of the first half, 30-15

The second half saw Boston College able to break the Orange zone for some points, cutting what was a 15 point lead down to seven by the eight minute mark of the frame. But the offense went stone cold again, allowing Syracuse to open up a 20-plus point lead in the late goings of the game.

Tyler Roberson nearly had a double-double in the first half for Syracuse, grabbing ten rebounds along with seven points in the first 20 minutes. But he picked up three fouls in six minutes in the second, relegating him to the bench with 10 points and 14 boards.

Malachi Richardson finished with 15 points for Syracuse, and Michael Gbinije added 14.

For BC, Eli Carter added nine points but shot 3-8 after his opening barrage. Garland Owens and Matt Milon were next best for BC with six points.

In total, BC shot 30% from the floor, including 38% in the second half after opening up the period at 60%. Syracuse finished at just under 48% for the night.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers.
