Some of you may be interested in knowing what the wiseguys think of this year's NCAA hockey tournament field. (For entertainment purposes only, of course.) Bovada Sportsbook has posted odds for this year's tournament and has pegged North Dakota as the odds-on favorite. Boston College is listed at 11/1, in a four way tie for 7th-favorite. Appropriately, given the nature of this year's field, most teams are bunched pretty closely together:
NCAA D1 Men's Ice Hockey - National Championship Odds
North Dakota 4/1
Minnesota State 13/2
Boston University 15/2
Miami (Ohio) 17/2
Minnesota 17/2
Denver 10/1
Michigan Tech 11/1
Harvard 11/1
Minnesota Duluth 11/1
Boston College 11/1
Nebraska Omaha 12/1
St. Cloud State 12/1
Providence 15/1
Yale 28/1
Quinnipiac 28/1
Rochester Institute of Technology 28/1
A few observations:
- No surprise that North Dakota is the favorite. In addition to being #1 for much of the season, odds are generally going to skew in the direction of bigger name, more well known teams. I almost expected BC to be higher up the favorites list for that reason.
- I'm a little surprised, for the same reason, that Minnesota State is the #2 favorite over BU. I think this probably has to do with the fact that BU will have to get through Minnesota (probably) to get to the Frozen Four, whereas the Mavericks have what appears to be a pretty straightforward regional on paper.
- NO RESPECK for Yale or Quinnipiac here, though it sort of makes sense given that they are playing BU and NoDak respectively, in each of those teams' backyard. Still, it strikes me as a little odd that the two teams that played for the national championship game two years ago have the same odds as RIT (!).
Odds to win each regional:
Northeast Regional
Boston University 3/2
Minnesota 2/1
Minnesota Duluth 7/4
Yale 15/2
West Regional
North Dakota 1/2
Michigan Tech 13/5
St. Cloud State 5/1
Quinnipiac 8/1
East Regional
Miami (Ohio) 9/5
Boston College 5/2
Denver 5/2
Providence 5/2
Midwest Regional
Minnesota State 10/11
Harvard 2/1
Nebraska Omaha 5/2
Rochester Institute of Technology 14/1
