For the third consecutive year, Russia eliminated the United States from gold medal contention at the World Junior Hockey Championships, topping the Americans 2-1 in a squeaker on Monday in Helsinki. The US jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period but got dominated in the second, falling behind 2-1. The Americans failed to cash in on numerous late third period opportunities, and that was all she wrote.
Tuesday at 9 AM ET, the US will face Sweden for the Bronze Medal, hoping for their first medal since winning gold in 2013. After that game, the players disperse back to their college and junior teams, including BC's Colin White.

One day after Canada struggled with Switzerland, only able to defeat them 3-2 in a shootout, the US completely smoked the Swiss like they were gouda. Colin White had this goal plus two assists as the Americans romped to a 10-1 victory, clinching their spot in the playoff rounds. Switzerland's loss eliminated them from contention, so we know that Sweden, the US, Canada and Denmark will be, in some order, the four teams to advance out of group A.
Tomorrow, the US plays Denmark at 9 AM and Canada plays Sweden at 1 PM in the final two group games. Sweden has clinched first place in the group but the US can lock down second place with a win. With a regulation loss, the US could theoretically fall all the way down to fourth. The teams' point totals are Sweden 9, the US 6, Canada 5 and Denmark 3.

Colin White made all of the headlines today at the World Junior Hockey Championship - first, for scoring in the second period to draw the US level with Canada 1-1; second, for unleashing this Cam Newton-inspired goal celebration, which surely made poor Don Cherry's head explode; and finally, for adding an assist on the late game winning goal that helped propel the US to a 4-2 win. For his efforts, he was named the USA's player of the game.
In addition to his headline-grabbing moments, White also stood out on the penalty kill for the US, particularly when they had to kill off a 5 minute major at the end of the first period stretching in to the beginning of the second. He got significant PK time and performed well.
The road doesn't get any easier for the US - they face Sweden next, on Monday at 9 AM ET. Sweden touched Switzerland today in their WJC opener.
