What we know:
-- Boston College and Lowell are now locked into the tournament's top two seeds. Boston University (#9), Massachusetts (#10) and Merrimack (#11) are also locked into their respective seeds. BU holds off UMass for the no. 9 seed by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker (1-0-1).
-- Two of Northeastern, Providence and Maine will earn the remaining two home ice spots in the quarterfinals. Northeastern has already clinched a spot in the Quarterfinals and will avoid playing in the #Octofinals next weekend. Two more clubs -- Providence, Maine and New Hampshire -- will also avoid the #Octofinals.
-- The big winner of the night was Providence, which jumped from sixth to a tie for third with Northeastern. A win tomorrow at Maine coupled with a Northeastern tie or loss would give the Friars the #3 seed heading into the tournament. Right now the Friars would have home ice for the Quarterfinal round in two weeks.
Here's how the Hockey East Tournament would look if the season ended today:
#Octofinals - Single Elimination (Campus sites; March 7-8, 2014)
#11 Merrimack at #6 New Hampshire (MC leads 1-0-0)
#10 Massachusetts at #7 Vermont (UVM leads 2-0-0)
#9 Boston University at #8 Notre Dame (ND leads 2-0-0)
Quarterfinal Round - Best-of-Three (Campus sites; March 14-16, 2014)
Lowest Remaining Seed at #1 Boston College
Second-Lowest Remaining Seed at #2 UMass Lowell
Highest Remaining Seed at #3 Northeastern
#5 Maine at #4 Providence (PC leads 1-0-0)
