Eagles in the Pros: Joe Whitney

Whitney currently leads the AHL in points.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

AT BC: Joe Whitney played at BC from 2007-2011. Whitney won 2 NCAA Championships with the Eagles (2008 and 2010). As a freshman, Whitney scored an impressive 51 points for BC (11 goals, 40 assists). Whitney was the 15th player in BC Men's Hockey history to record 100 career assists - he graduated with 102. Whitney was named Captain his senior year.

Here's a goal he scored as a freshman to help BC advance to the Frozen Four - BC would go on to win the NCAA Championship:

POST-BC: Whitney played one game with the Portland Pirates following the end of BC's 2010-2011 season, but has spent most of his profession career in the Devils organization. Whitney played 4 seasons for the Albany Devils, during which time he made 5 NHL appearances for New Jersey. Whitney made the AHL All Star roster in 2014 - he also received his first NHL call-up in 2014, on January 24. During the 2012-2013 season, Whitney was 14th in the AHL with 26 goals (just one goal behind former teammate, Ben Smith!)

Whitney has shown marked improvement each season in the AHL, going from 44 points in the 2011-2012 season to 60 points in the 2014-2015 season. In the 2014-2015 season, Whitney played 4 games from the New Jersey Devils. He scored his first (and, to date, only) NHL goal against Detroit on December 31, 2014:

This Season: On July 1, 2015, Whitney signed a two way contract with the New York Islanders. Whitney has spent the beginning of the season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where he has 5 goals and 13 assists in 15 games. Whitney leads the AHL in points with 18 right now. His 13 assists also give him the most assists in the league. In addition to his AHL leads, Whitney is tied for third on the Sound Tigers in goals and +/- (he's currently +7). It's early in the season, but the Sound Tigers could be the AHL team to beat this year - they have 11 wins this season.

Bridgeport's next game is this Saturday, when they take on former Eagle Paul Carey and the Hershey Bears.
