Boston College GIF of the Year: Quarterfinals, Matchup #2

The GIF of gab

NCAA Football: Miami at Boston College Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

And just like that, we have our first GIF winner of this year’s tournament quarterfinals! AJ Dillon, as he has been known to do, ran over his competition, Ky Bowman’s game-winner against Wake Forest, though it was a decently close matchup.

So with AJ Dillon advancing to the semifinals, let’s take a look at our second quarterfinal matchup.

Walker To The House

Was this the high point of the Boston College Athletics season? The campus buzz was just about at a fever pitch by the take this game had kicked off, with Game Day on campus, a #17 (!!) ranking, and still high hopes for the winter and fall sports. Walker’s first quarter punt return to put the Eagles in front of an undefeated Clemson blew the roof off Alumni Stadium (as evidenced by the fact that there is no roof) and made us think “hey, maybe we’ve got something here!”

Of course, it was all downhill from there with Anthony Brown going down with an injury and everything else in BC Athletics falling apart shortly after... but what a moment this was, eh?!

Flanagan’s Miracle Shot

It’s hard to put into words exactly what this moment was like live for those of us watching this game. It was the Women’s Hockey East championship game, and the Eagles had just fallen behind Northeastern late, making it seem like another trophy was going to slip away. With just six seconds remaining, the Eagles had themselves an offensive zone faceoff down by one, and morale was so low that many of us grabbed our things to start to walk out of Schneider Arena.

In the ensuing chaos with the BC bench trying to get the attention of the referee about the time not being right on the clock, which included a notebook flying onto the ice, a perfect faceoff, a slapshot for the ages, and the one true queen Erin Connolly scurrying off the bench to pick up the aforementioned notebook before anyone noticed... Kali Flanagan found the back of the net to tie the game in a moment where there was absolutely no hope left for a miracle. It was a true moment of complete and utter shock.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a 2018-2019 Boston College moment if things didn’t go absolutely careening downhill right when you get excited, but that just makes the GIF even more appropriate for this tournament.

Let’s take a look at our updated bracket:
