Welcome back to the 5th annual Boston College GIF of the Year tournament! The first half of the bracket featured some strong contenders, but the second half is sure to match the hype.
You can check in on all of the matchups right here.
In our last GIF matchup of the first half of the bracket, BC Women’s Hockey’s Caitrin Lonergan’s “Bobby Orr” style goal easily dispatched Happy Daz by a score of 72-28 to advance to the quarterfinals. She’s going to be tough to beat.
If one thing can be said about the first half of the bracket, it’s that thus far, the matchups have not been close. Our closest vote was a 63-37 win for Steve Addazio’s locker room celebration, which beat Joe Woll’s pair of stops against UMass-Lowell. It’s surprising that nothing has been close yet given this tournament’s history of somehow producing ties — even requiring a celebrity guest tie-breaker after a re-vote also ended in a tie.
Perhaps there will be more suspense this week! We shall see.
It’s probably a tournament requirement that an overtime goal to win a championship has to be entered into the bracket. Senior captain Andie Anastos — whose BC Athletics career is somehow not over — rifled home her second overtime goal in as many nights to earn the Eagles the Hockey East Championship.
Two walkoffs in one matchup! Tatiana Cortez’s walk-off home run was surely the moment of the season in all of BC Athletics. With Tatiana’s father hospitalized after being injured in the line of duty, over 100 local police officers showed up to cheer for his daughter on Senior Day in his place.
Cortez hitting a walk-off home run in that situation would be laughed out of any scriptwriters’ meeting, but reality often trumps fiction.
Let’s check in on the updated bracket:
Let’s get right back to the ballots! As always, you have 24 hours to vote, ending at 9am on Tuesday.
