GOAL BY GOAL: BC Women's Hockey Coasts To Win Over Vermont

Eagles remain undefeated with 4-0 win over the Catamounts

BC Athletics

After last weekend's pair of romps over Northeastern and BC's average of over 6 goals scored per game, you might have expected BC to come out flying and score early and often against the struggling Catamounts. But the Eagles played much of the game on cruise control and came away with a relatively pedestrian (by their standards) 4-0 win up at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Boston College Goal #1: 13:06 of the 1st period
Alex Carpenter (Haley Skarupa, Lexi Bender)

BC 1, UVM 0

Alex Carpenter got the party started to put the Eagles up 1-0 after a somewhat slow start. We'll see some more of this later, but what a lethal combination Skarupa and Carpenter make! Skarupa sets up the play with her wheels and Carpenter beats her defender. The result is a really nice goal.

BC ended the period much stronger than it started, though, and went up by two almost at the buzzer.

Boston College Goal #2: 19:54 of the 2nd
Dana Trivigno (Kate Leary)

BC 2, UVM 0

Just before this goal, Leary gets pushed into the net but gets right back up when UVM gives up a turnover right in front of her. She passes across the crease to Trivigno who's there for the tap in to put BC up 2-0 after one.

The second period was more of the same: BC playing a bit sloppy at times, with errant passes going to Catamount players instead of Eagles and with Vermont doing a good job of bottling BC up and keeping them to the perimeter. But midway through, BC would tack on to the lead.

Boston College Goal #3: 9:52 of the 2nd period
Haley Skarupa (Alex Carpenter, Kenzie Kent)

BC 3, UVM 0

A 2-on-1 with Carpenter and Skarupa is as tough an example of "pick your poison" as you can find. Carpenter dishes over to Skarupa, and Skarupa sees she's been given a ton of space and skates to the net. She picks the corner beautifully, and it's 3-0.

BC started to play much better in the third period, putting up a whopping 21 shots and doing a much better job than they had been of finishing out games. They really put the hammer down and choked the life out of Vermont, scoring one last insurance goal in the process.

Boston College Goal #4: 7:08 of the 3rd period
Alex Carpenter (Haley Skarupa, Lexi Bender)

BC 4, UVM 0 -- FINAL

Very nearly offside on this goal, but Skarupa is able to hold the line as Carpenter skates in. Carpenter gets around the last defender and snipes off a wrister in one motion, beating the UVM goaltender glove side and wrapping up the scoring, with 4-0 your final.

Worth noting is that this was Katie Burt's first game back from the U18 World Championship, in which she backstopped Team USA to the gold medal over Canada. Burt was clearly on top of her game—the shutout is obvious evidence of that, but she looked like a veteran, making saves with confidence and really limiting rebounds. Burt is now 3rd in the country at a .949 save percentage, and second with a now sub-1 GAA of 0.98.

Lastly, this was a very good game for the BC defense. Typically a BC defensive strategy involves having the puck in the offensive zone the entire game, but until the third period, Vermont actually did a decent job of keeping it out of their own end for long stretches. Unfortunately for the Catamounts, the few times they were able to break into BC's end, they were tied up almost immediately by the BC defenders.

BC will rest up tonight for game two against Vermont tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the season series.
