A day following the announcement of the men's hockey captains, the women's hockey team followed suit with an tweet of their own.
Happy to announce our 2014-2015 captains are: Emily Field & Emily Pfalzer. The assistant captains are: Alex Carpenter & Erin Kickham.— BC Women's Hockey (@BC_WHockey) May 9, 2014
The captains are selected by a team vote.
Emily Field was one of the team leaders on the ice last season, easily identified as one of the hardest skaters on the team, and often seen playing in the dirty areas of the ice. She wasn't just about effort, though -- she got results, as the team's 3rd highest scorer.
Defenseman Emily Pfalzer became one of the team's best players by the end of the season and is a dark horse to be named a 2015 Patty Kazmaier finalist. After recovering from injury early in the season, she evolved into one of the nation's elite defensemen, in a similar mold as men's hockey captain Michael Matheson as an offensive force on the blue line. She's been recognized nearly every year for academic excellence since she was in high school and has a history of leadership as a former assistant captain for the 2011 gold medal-winning USA U18 team.
Alex Carpenter is the team's 2014 Olympian, redshirting for the BC season to centralize with Team USA for the Sochi Olympics. She was Team USA's top players, playing on the top line and power play unit with former Eagle Kelli Stack. She returns as a redshirt junior as alternate captain, also has a leadership pedigree as being team captain in high school at Governors Academy in both softball and hockey.
Finally, Erin Kickham is a classic off-the-ice leader for the team in being named assistant captain. She hasn't hit the scoresheet yet in her career on the Heights, but is a born leader whose bio reads like the resume for someone running for president or something. 2011 Found Award recipient for dedication and leadership in the sport of ice hockey... captain of the ice hockey team... captain of the field hockey team... two-time captain of the lacrosse team... member of the Hockey East all-academic team since freshman year... Whoa.
Congratulation to Emily, Emily, Alex, and Erin and good luck to them as they try to lead BC to their first national title.
