Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove opening statement...
"I'm disappointed. I thought we played like a pretty good football team in the first and third quarters and not so much in the second and fourth quarters. I thought we toed-up with them pretty good in those two quarters. We didn't do a very good job on offense in the second. Because of their defense, the field got shorter and shorter for them and we ended up behind. We fought our (butts) off in the third quarter. I thought we did some nice things on both sides of the ball. It got away from us in the fourth quarter. We're disappointed. I told the guys, ‘If we play like we did in the first and third quarters, we can compete with a lot of people.'"
Cosgrove on getting players playing time..
"We'll know what we got out of it after we watch the video. Certainly a lot of guys played. We knew it was going to be hot down here. We wanted to use this game as a barometer for what we can be. We came down to win and felt like - in the first and second quarters - we were in position to do that."
Cosgrove on how the game got away from Maine...
"[Boston College] stepped up. I keep telling myself that was the 11th-ranked defense in the country last year. They're pretty good. They turned the game around a little bit with field position and finally we gave up the score before the half. Our guys kept competing. I really like how our guys competed in the third quarter. They came out of the locker room, had a couple first downs on offense and a couple three-and-outs on defense. It really felt like we had a chance. It got away from us in the fourth quarter. We'll learn a lot from this game. [Boston College] didn't stumble a lot. They didn't turn it over. They played a very clean game. When we've had success in the past against a FBS opponent, they've turned it over to us. There weren't a lot of penalties today either. We have to eliminate big plays on defense. We have to tackle better. We have to be better on third down. We'll find a way."
Cosgrove on the BC running game...
"They hammered us with the run game. We knew all week long that we were going to see four backs, probably of a higher caliber than we will see the rest of the season. Top to bottom they can hit you with a different style of running back. It's difficult when you have a twisting-turning guy and then a big fullback. We didn't tackle that well."
Cosgrove on the play of quarterback Dan Collins...
"It's a definite improvement from last year - his poise and decision making. There were some balls on-the-money that we didn't hang on to. We had a better handle on what we were doing. We just didn't finish some throws. At times there was pressure. We have to give them credit too. They're a very good team. He's a very good situational coach. They're going to give a lot of people fits this year, not just us."
QB Dan Collins on the team's third down play...
"We have to do a better job at winning third down. We had some opportunities to move the chains and we didn't. I would have liked to have a [few] more first downs and stay on the field for the defense. In the first quarter, on that first drive, we did that but in the second quarter, we needed to be more consistent to put more drives together and move the chains."
Collins on scouting BC...
"I think we did a good job scouting [Boston College] all week and we knew that once we got into third and long, they were going to bring pressure. We knew that if we made mistakes, [Boston College] was going to come after us and that is what they did. Sometimes we didn't pick it up but I think we did an alright job at protection."
Collins on playing at Alumni Stadium...
"I feel like I've grown up playing out there. I was saying before the game that we were here last year and it isn't any different. [Boston College] is just a little bit better of a team. I think I played better today than I did last year as far as the quarterback role but I have to get better."
Collins on Maine's consistency on offense...
"There are no excuses for it. The defense was out there. We need to have their backs and put drives together to give them rest on the sidelines and give them time to make their adjustments. I don't think we did a good job with that at times. We need to be more consistent on drives and moving the chains."
DE Trevor Bates on the scoreboard at the end of the game...
"I think it was closer. In the second half, we gave up two big plays, plays with missed tackles and a couple of times, we didn't defeat the blocks. [In the fourth quarter], I think we missed a couple plays that ended up being scoring drives."
