Jewel Strawberry Goes Off For BC Volleyball, Eagles Go 1-2 In Oregon Classic

John Quackenbos, BC Athletics

Boston College Volleyball started off the season by going 1-2 with all three matches going for sweeps in their opening invitational at the Oregon Classic.

After starting the 2018 season 9-0, the Eagles kicked off the 2019 slate with a significantly tougher tournament than last year’s Boston College Invitational in which BC took on Hartford, Providence, and Sacred Heart. This year’s season-opening trip to Eugene, Oregon saw the Eagles take on Oregon State, UC-Irvine, and Oregon, and while it didn’t go quite as well, it gave BC a great test to tune up for the year.

The Eagles started out against Oregon State on Friday night and were taken down pretty handily by the Beavers 25-14, 25-11, 25-16. Jewel Strawberry led BC with 5 kills on the night.

Saturday, Boston College started off a doubleheader in style with a sweep of UC-Irvine 25-18, 25-19, 25-20. Strawberry led all players with an even dozen kills to pick up the first win of the year for BC.

The nightcap against the host Oregon Ducks didn’t go quite as well, but the Eagles put up a good fight in the first two sets, eventually falling 25-21, 25-20, 25-16. Once again, it was Jewel Strawberry leading the way for BC with 9 kills in the losing effort and wrapping up the weekend against three solid opponents.

It should get much easier in BC’s next invitational, September 6th and 7th at the UConn Challenge, with matches against Central Connecticut, UConn, and Iona College. The Eagles will look to get back on the winning track to try and improve on last season’s 15-15 record!
