Fresh off a narrow 1-0 loss in the ACC semifinals, the Boston College men’s soccer team learns its tournament fate this afternoon at 1 PM at the NCAA Selection Show. The show will be streamed live on Facebook and Twitter.
With 48 teams making the tournament, and BC ranked #13 among eligible teams in RPI, the Eagles should almost certainly be in the tournament, even with an 8-8-3 record. BC played a murderous schedule and went 3-3-2 in the grind that is the ACC, including a huge win over top-seeded perennial power UNC in the ACC quarterfinals.
The big question is whether BC’s #13 RPI ranking will be enough to either be:
-In the top 16, which would get them a first round bye;
-Or, seeded #17-32, which would allow them to host a first round game
The subjective polls are lower on BC than the RPI is, with the Coaches poll slotting them in at #25 and the TopDrawerSoccer rankings excluding BC from the top 25.
We can’t really claim to be experts on how the soccer selection committee thinks, but it seems like they always (probably rightly) give ACC teams a lot of benefit of the doubt. A home game in the Round of 48 probably seems like a fair outcome.
Fingers crossed & go Eagles!
