Colorado College is a pretty bad hockey team, but with how much talent the Eagles lost to the pros in the offseason, no wins can be taken for granted.
Most impressively, the Eagles put together a strong, stress-free win over a team that they should handle, doing everything you could have asked in a quality 4-1 win over the Tigers.
Colorado College Goal #1 (PPG): 5:30 of the 1st period
Nick Halloran (Branden Makara, Teemu Kivihalme)
CC 1, BC 0
BC came out strong from the drop of the puck, so of course Colorado College got on the board first.
BC’s #2 goalie Ryan Edquist got the start and looked just about as good as Joe Woll. The first and only goal he got beat on was a complete cannon over the shoulder — one of those tip-your-cap-now-let’s-go-get-it-back goals.
And BC didn’t take very long to do just that.
Boston College Goal #1 (PPG): 6:36 of the 1st period
Colin White (Ryan Fitzgerald, Casey Fitzgerald)
BC 1, CC 1
Hold up...
Boston College Goal #1 (PPG): 6:36 of the 1st period
...ENHANCE...
IT’S A POWER PLAY GOAL!
After starting the season a maddening 0 for 23 on the power play, BC finally breaks through for their first power play goal of the season, this to tie the game early in the first period.
Last week, Joe lamented that the team’s lack of scoring was largely a result of the big guns, Colin White and Ryan Fitzgerald, not yet finding the scoresheet. Both were a big part of the BC attack tonight, and it felt like BC was really firing on cylinders.
Ryan Fitzgerald takes a low blast intentionally wide for the ricochet off Conte’s bouncy boards, and there’s Colin White creeping in from behind to gather it in. He sticks the puck in before CC goalie Alex Leclerc can go coast to coast, and BC has it tied up early.
Boston College Goal #2 (PPG, GWG): 18:20 of the 1st period
Casey Fitzgerald (Colin White, Michael Kim)
BC 2, CC 1
Another power play goal!
With how good the BC power play looked at moving the puck against Colorado College, it’s amazing it took so long for the power play to find pay dirt. And the Eagles got another one before the first period was up.
The GIF makes it look simple, but before this the Eagles had a nice set of movement to set up the play. But let’s be real here: This goal is all about Casey Fitzgerald earning his contractor’s license with this absolutely roof job of a goal from the top of the faceoff circle.
Pop goes the water bottle, and BC has a lead it would not relinquish.
Boston College Goal #3: 5:00 of the 2nd period
Jesper Mattila (Zach Walker, Mike Booth)
BC 3, CC 1
BC kept rolling in the 2nd period, for sure, but... good Lord, this was a soft goal given up by Leclerc.
Mattila, who scored his first career goal here, fires the puck on net, but Leclerc should have a great look at it. Instead, he does the hockey version of a Bill Buckner and just totally whiffs with the glove.
There are other angles that make it look a lot worse than this one does. But nonetheless, it’s in the net, and BC has some insurance.
Boston College Goal #4 (12:51 of the 2nd period)
Colin White (Scott Savage, Michael Campoli)
BC 4, CC 1 — FINAL
A little more Colin White for the road. BC sends the puck up ice from their own end, and Colin White beats two Tiger defensemen through the neutral zone clean to the puck. He comes in on his own for a breakaway, and finishes off with a nice forehand to give BC a comfortable lead that they would sit on for the rest of the game.
BC heads back on the road once again, but they’ll in their Happy Place nonetheless. The Eagles had up to Worcester to take on Holy Cross at the DCU Center, site of many a BC NCAA regional triumph for the Eagles. Game time is 7pm on Saturday where the Eagles will try and improve on their 3-2-0 record.
