With tonight's road win over the UMass Minutemen, Boston College Hockey Head Coach Jerry York has reached coaching immortality.
Coach York overtook former Michigan State head coach Ron Mason a few years back with his 925th career win, but today's victory was even more special. After already leading the pack as the all-time wins leader, Coach York earned his 1,000th career win, becoming the first and only coach to ever reach that milestone.
No active coach is even close to Coach York's win total. Coming into tonight, Michigan coach Red Berenson was second among active coaches with 824 wins—so he's got a long, long way to go to catch Jerry York.
Everyone knew win number 1,000 was coming, but the anticipation just made it more exciting. With a tough start to the second half, BC couldn't quite come through with enough wins to reach the milestone at home or down the road at Agganis Arena, but a ride down the Mass Pike worked just as well.
Congratulations to Coach York, and here's hoping for another 1,000 wins before he retires in 2116!
