With only two conference games against each opponent, and most series taking place on the same weekend, a quick home and home can really make or break your position in the conference standings due to tiebreakers.
The last two weekends have done exactly for that for the Eagles, with a late goal from Ryan Fitzgerald on Saturday night giving BC a well-earned 1-1 tie over BU and its second straight 1-0-1 season series from a top conference opponent.
Boston University Goal #1: 11:10 of the 2nd period
Matt Grzelczycyzcyzk (Danny O'Regan)
BU 1, BC 0
The game had the feel of a goaltender battle almost from the drop of the puck. Saturday's first period was much more wide open than than Friday's, as evidenced by the 12-12 shot count in the opening frame, but neither team could break through after 20 minutes and the teams went into the locker room scoreless.
It was BU who finally got on the board first more than halfway through the game. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson is the Terrier who makes a move around Tuch (yikes) in the first place and BC is lucky that he can't quite settle the puck for a better shot.
Savage picks up the rebound and throws the puck up ice without much of a plan even though he looks like he has all the time in the world to settle things down, and it winds up on the stick of O'Regan up top.
O'Regan takes a swipe at it, and it probably wouldn't even be on target except for Grzelycyzcyzyck's nice deflection out front to Statue Of Liberty Thatcher Demko and give BU the lead. Just a bad sequence for BC all around.
BC really started to turn it on in the third period, but several saves by Maguire (who had a fantastic weekend for BU) made it look like it just wasn't going to be BC's game. But the Ryan Fitzgerald came to the rescue.
Boston College Goal #1: 17:55 of the 3rd period
Ryan Fitzgerald (Matthew Gaudreau, Ian McCoshen)
BC 1, BU 1 -- FINAL (OT)
After all the big saves Maguire made in this game, you wouldn't have expected this shot to be the one that beats him. But Fitzerald The Elder seems to catch him by surprise with the turnaround shot that's tickets to the upper corner.
Kudos to Matty Gaudreau and Colin White behind the net for fighting for this puck to even give the play a chance to happen. The Eagles were bossing BU in battles for a good chunk of the game, so it's satisfying to see them earn the draw because of a hard-nosed play.
So even though BC came away with a good draw, Jerry York remains at 999 career wins for another week. BC heads down the pike to face a struggling UMass on Friday night for their next opportunity at history.
