It's game day, Eagles, as the Boston College men's hockey team begins its Beanpot title defense (x5) against the Northeastern Huskies at TD Garden (8:00 p.m.). The game will be televised on NESN.
Boston College has once again shaken a slow start to the season and has been red hot since the calendar turned to 2015. The Eagles have posted a 7-1-1 record in January, vaulting the program into a tie for 2nd place with UMass Lowell in the Hockey East regular season standings and, more importantly, above the PairWise cut line for the National tournament.
Similarly, Northeastern has shaken a disastrous 0-8-1 start to the year and has been playing some pretty good hockey of late. The Huskies are 5-1-3 since the New Year, with the only loss a 4-2 setback to Boston College back on January 10. This year's BC-Northeastern matchup is a rematch of last year's Beanpot Championship game. Boston College won, 4-1, for its fifth straight Beanpot victory; a program best.
In the day's earlier matchup, the best Harvard team in many years (12-5-2 overall, 8-4-2 ECAC) takes on Hockey East-leading Boston University (16-4-4, 11-2-2 Hockey East). After jumping out to a fast 10-1-2 start to the year, Harvard has faded a bit over the last month, posting a 2-4-0 mark in January and falling from the top of the PairWise rankings. BU continues to roll—5-1-2 last month—and is seeking its first Beanpot championship appearance in three seasons.
With a suddenly resurgent Northeastern, BC and BU riding winning streaks and Harvard playing its best hockey in years, this is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and wide open Beanpot tournaments in many years.
