GOAL BY GOAL: Boston College Hockey Rolls Past Colorado College

Eagles take big nonconference win to open the weekend

BC Athletics

Winning feels good, doesn't it? Who cares if it's against a bad opponent?

BC exorcised its 2011 demons Friday night in a quality 6-2 win over Colorado College.  Five different Eagles made an appearance on the scoresheet--good to see. Let's break it down.

Boston College Goal #1: 9:53 of the 1st period
Cam Spiro (Michael Sit)

BC 1, CC 0

Spiromaniacs rejoice! After the Spiromaniacs screamed from the balcony at Section OO for what seems like years now, Cam Spiro has finally gotten his chance as a full time player. And oh-by-the-way, he's currently tied for 2nd on the team in goals.

He looks good here, on his first goal of the night. Colorado College makes a clearing attempt that goes off the skate of another Tiger, right onto the waiting stick of Spiro. A little skate around the slot and a tough angle shot later and BC is up 1-0.

That was all the scoring for the first period. BC came out and played pretty well to start the game despite giving up three Colorado College power plays. The penalty kill was a perfect 5 for 5 on the night, however--great to see.

The Tigers were able to do some damage even strength, however.

Colorado College Goal #1: 3:08 of the 2nd period
Cody Bradley (Jaccob Slavin)

BC 1, CC 1

Well, this is certainly not good. Good job, good effort on the clear, Demko, though to be fair his teammates didn't do much to help.

Demko tries to throw the puck up the boards, but unfortunately a CC player is there waiting for it. He just skates in and passes across the crease where Bradley has pretty much a tap in goal.

Boston College Goal #2: 5:25 of the 2nd period
Quinn Smith (Destry Straight, Danny Linell)

BC 2, CC 1

Ah, much better! This is what we want to see. Really nice work from Smith in particular on this goal.

What you really want to see out of this line is some grind-it-out work down low, and that's just what you get here. Just before the start of this GIF, Smith outworks his man along the boards to free the puck and finds Linell, who in turn finds Straight in a little bit of space.

Straight takes a little shot-pass that's snagged by Smith, who makes a nice move around Tyler Marble to give BC a lead they would never relinquish.

Boston College Goal #3 (PPG, GWG): 8:29 of the 2nd period
Ryan Fitzgerald (Zach Sanford, Teddy Doherty)

BC 3, CC 1

I'm not even going to describe this one. Just sit back and enjoy it.

My goodness, Fitzgerald ate that poor goalie's soul on this one. Goal of the year nominee.

Boston College Goal #4: 10:42 of the 2nd period
Noah Hanifin (Chris Calnan, Alex Tuch)

BC 4, CC 1

Well, I mean, they all count, right?

I'm not sure Noah Hanifin had visions of this one when he was dreaming up ways for him to score his first collegiate goal, but it's in the back of the net, and that's what counts.

Hanifin chased down a pretty harmless puck into the corner and just kind of threw it over toward Calnan who was coming in behind. It takes a wacky bounce off the poor Tiger and right through Marble for the goal that really put the game out of reach for CC.

Boston College Goal #5: 19:55 of the 2nd period
Chris Calnan (Adam Gilmour)

BC 5, CC 1

Fortunately BC didn't have to rely on lucky goals to win this game. Chris Calnan has a beauty of a finisher on this goal with just 5 seconds left in the 2nd period. Just a filthy backhand over Marble who totally (and I do mean totally) sold out on the poke check to leave the top shelf all kinds of wide open.

Four goals in the 2nd know, for a team that was supposed to struggle on offense, things aren't looking too bad.

Colorado College Goal #2: 5:14 of the 3rd period
Alex Roos (Jaccob Slavin, Sam Rothstein)

BC 5, CC 2

Ah, now that's just sloppy. We've got guys just kind of standing around instead of trying to make a defensive play. Nice shot by Colorado College to beat Demko, but really we should have defended this better. Matheson doesn't look like he's doing much at all here. Credit to Savage for forcing the puck carrier to make a play, but no one accounts for the guy coming in to the faceoff dot and Colorado College gets one back.

But let's end things on a happier note, shall we?

Boston College Goal #6: 7:25 of the 3rd period
Cam Spiro (Alex Tuch, Adam Gilmour)

BC 6, CC 2 -- FINAL

Spiro time again! This line looked pretty good all night, really.

BC does a really nice job breaking out of the zone and Tuch finds himself with tons of room to work with once he crosses the blue line. He doesn't have much of an angle to take the shot, but Spiro has done a tremendous job of battling his way past his defender. A well timed pass from Tuch finds Spiro's stick, and that's that.

Touchdown Eagles (with the missed extra point, because OF COURSE we miss the extra point).

It was a pretty good win over a really bad team. Hard to find anything really negative in this one, though. And BC will have to move on quickly, as they look to get their first league win of the year Saturday against UMass at Conte Forum. Puck drop is at 7pm. We'll see you right back here.
