Ryan Fitzgerald cut, will join Eagles for holiday tournament

Bruce Bennett

The United States World Junior team has made its first cuts as it prepares to depart for Sweden next week for the 2014 World Junior Championship. BC freshman Ryan Fitzgerald was among the three cuts, along with J.T. Compher and Anthony D'Angelo.

Ian McCoshen, Steve Santini and Thatcher Demko comprise the BC representation with three cuts still to come between now and the start of the tournament. The silver lining is that Ryan Fitzgerald will now be able to join the undermanned Eagles when they head to Pittsburgh for a holiday tournament on Dec. 27 & 28.

The first round of cuts came on the heels of the US's 3-2 overtime victory over Minnesota State last night in exhibition play. Ian McCoshen scored the game tying goal for the US team at 9:03 of the third period. Fellow Eagle Steve Santini assisted on the US's first goal. Minnesota Golden Gopher Hudson Fasching scored this ridiculous goal n overtime to give the US the victory.

The US junior team has two pre-tournament tuneups scheduled on the other side of the pond: Dec. 20 vs. Sweden, and Dec. 22 vs. Finland. Head coach Don Lucia will use those games to help determine who the final three cuts will be.
