2012-13 Boston College Hockey Season Preview: On The Hobey Baker And Attendance

Could a Boston College Eagle win this year's Hobey Baker Award? How will the Eagles fare when it comes to home attendance this season?

Hobey Baker?

As you can see by heading to our official BCInterruption.com online store, the "Gaudreaubey Baker" campaign is well under way. Johnny Gaudreau will likely be near the top of the national scoring charts this year. On a well-balanced team, though, will it be enough? David Emma ('91) and Mike Mottau (2000) are the only two Eagles to win college hockey's most prestigious individual award; the most recent and memorable BC snub was Nate Gerbe in 2008.

Eleven of the last 12 Hobey winners have come from one of the Western conferences, so I wouldn't go betting on Gaudreau for this award just yet. That said, please buy some t-shirts.

Attendance

Off the ice, BC may well shatter recent years' attendance marks this season. Between the team's recent dominance, the surge in popularity of student season tickets (thanks partly, unfortunately, to the football team going down the toilet), and the NHL lockout, BC hockey could be a tough ticket this year.

BC Hockey home average attendance:

2011-12 - 6,171 (1st in Hockey East)
2010-11 - 6,296 (1st in Hockey East)
2009-10 - 5,012 (4th in Hockey East)
2008-09 - 5,976 (2nd in Hockey East)
2007-08 - 5,592 (2nd in Hockey East)
