BC wins their first ever game in Happy Valley

Welcome to the BC sports video archive series.  On the first day of every month from September through March, I will post one of the many old game videos from either Boston College football or basketball games from the 80s through the 2000s.

I do hope you enjoy the series and a look back at some of the history that has made Boston College what it is today.  The football videos will all be television broadcasts, the basketball videos on the other hand, will be a combination of TV broadcasts and actual coaches game films, many of which have never been seen.

We will start on October 17, 1992 in State College, Pennsylvania, where Coach Tom Coughlin took his #20 Boston College Eagles (4-0-1) to face Joe Paterno and his #9 Penn State Nittany Lions (4-1) before 96,130 at Beaver Stadium.

BC had only defeated Penn State once in program history, a 27-17 win in Foxboro in 1983, Doug Flutie's junior year.  The Eagles had never won at PSU going 0-8 in State College and just 1-19 overall against the Lions heading into this game.

BC's 1992 season, it's second under Tom Coughlin, ended with the program's first bowl game in six years, but started with four straight home games, all wins, against Rutgers (37-20), Northwestern (49-0), Navy (28-0) and Michigan State (14-0), the last time the program registered three shutouts in the same season (first since 1962) and the first time with three consecutive shutouts since 1942!

The Eagles would then travel to West Virginia where they tied the Mountaineers 24-24.

Against Penn State, BC would score 21 points in the final 3:58 of the first half, to open up a 28-10 halftime lead on the way to a 35-32 win.

Boston College was lead by Jr QB Glenn Foley, who completed 21-37 passes for 344 yards as well as RB Chuckie Dukes who ran for 149 yards on 29 carries.

BC eventually opened up a 35-16 lead before PSU rallied with 16 points in the last seven minutes.  The Lions actually recovered an onside kick with just 1:30 remaining, but the rally was snuffed out when Eagle DB Joe Kamara intercepted a John Sacca pass to seal the win.

Enjoy the game!!
