Boston College 24, Wake Forest 10: Defense Leads The Way

Don Brown's lockdown D puts Boston College at 2-0.

Jared Wickerham

This is so much more fun than Spazball!

The Eagles used a stifling defense and some power runs by Andre Williams to push their way past the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and, more importantly, bring #TheRivalry Cup Championship Trophy Banner back to the Heights.

It wasn't a perfect win, not at all, but there were flashes of some very good football out of the Eagles. Boston College started out strong, converting on a Wake Forest option fumble (this would become a theme) for an early score. A brilliant 30 yard Price-to-Campanaro touchdown pass on the next Wake Forest drive knotted the score at 7, but the Eagles would strike with a field goal and touchdown before the end of the half to go up two scores.

Wake nearly made the game much more of a nailbiter at the end of the first half. After yet another option fumble recovered by BC, the Eagles attempted to move down the field for one last score but went three-and-out. Wake blocked the BC punt back to the 3 yard line, but the Eagles would stuff Wake four times on the goal line -- including a brilliant 4th down stop by Steele Divitto, pulling the ball carrier backward just as he was reaching the goal line -- to keep the BC lead at 2 possessions.

The defense continued its strong play into the 2nd half. After a punishing Andre Williams touchdown drive gave BC a 24-7 lead, Wake drove inside the BC 5 yard line once again, but could not advance further. The Deacs had to settle for 3, bringing the score to its final of 24-10.

Williams finished with a monster game, tallying 205 yards and a score, including all 47 yards and 4 first downs (seriously, he ran the ball for positive yards on all 8 plays, like what??) on BC's final drive to put the game on ice.

Not a perfect game, but a solid victory -- particularly on the part of the defense. It's early, but Don Brown appears to have made fine Irish whiskey out of lemons. Or something. Hopes for the upset next week in SoCal, at the very least, remain alive!

Leave your thoughts on the game below. Full recap tomorrow. 2-0!
