It's hard to believe, but tomorrow marks the end of the regular season for the Boston College Eagles. But before we can look ahead to our bowl matchup, we still have business to attend to with our rivals the Syracuse Orange. Tomorrow marks a battle between two programs in markedly different shape at the current time. BC, who was almost unanimously picked by the "experts" to finish somewhere near the bottom, has battled all season on their way to six wins and some close ones against some marquee opponents. Syracuse, on the other hand, has come unglued, with only wins against Villanova, Central Michigan and Wake Forest to brag about. But with most rivalries, you have to leave the rest of the season behind you, emotions will run high, so let's take a look at BC vs. Syracuse.
Big Questions
Syracuse has a pretty solid defense; how will the Eagles attack it? What defense will SU bring to BC, the one that held Duke to 259 yards, or the one that looked like an absolute sieve against PIttsburgh and Notre Dame? It's Tyler Murphy's last home game (sad face); does he have one more magical run in him to excite the crowd? What about the running backs? Poll time, who has the most rushing yards at the end of the day: Murphy, Marcus Outlow or Jon Hilliman? Will BC go back to some more trick plays, or was that something we will only see against really good opponents? On defense—Syracuse isn't very good on offense—how will Don Brown attack? Can the Eagles force some early turnovers against A.J. Long, a true freshman? Can we please not have a Diamond Ferri emerge tomorrow? Also can we not have a repeat performance from the 2013 defense on Saturday? Will we continue to get big plays from the front seven, a group that hasn't gotten the respect they really deserve? Alex Howell or Mike Knoll, who is kicking on Saturday?
Lingering Questions
Last home game of the year, it's a rivalry game, but during Thanksgiving Weekend—how will this effect attendance? Also it's going to be cold, so will our fickle fans that can't handle 30 degree temperatures be watching this at home? Last season Steve Addazio invited the fans on the field at the end of the final home game, can we expect the same this year? This is an important game for the Eagles, how will a win effect their bowl standing? What the hell is "hard nosed"?
What To Drink To Warm Your Fingers, And Your Hatred For Syracuse
Saranac Pale Ale: Last year, I kind of wimped out and just selected "anything by Saranac." I really do enjoy their beers, so in honor of playing a school from upstate New York, I decided to pick Saranac again, but this time I would be more specific. As I've mentioned before this during this season, I have been kind of on the fence on IPAs. They are good and all, but after drinking a couple, your mouth just tastes like a hops explosion, which honestly isn't that pleasant. This fall I've gotten on a kick of trying some other types of beers. I really enjoyed English bitters, brown ales, red ales, and also pale ales. While Pale Ales, specifically this one, have a bit of the bite you'd expect from an IPA, it's not as overwhelming, which makes it's redrinkability that much higher. Saranac did a real nice job with this batch, as it has a hint of hoppiness, but the flavor is much more complex with hints of fruit and caramel. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the Saranac beers, but for Saturday's game this is my recommendation.
Fireside Chat with Baldwin Jr.
Baldwin Jr: CAW CAW! WELCOMES BACK TO MY WEEKLY PREDILICATION SHOWCASED. LAST WEEK I SPENTS SOME TIME WITH THE KNOLES, AND PROMISED NOT TO TALK ANY BADLY ABOUT ANY OF THEIR SCHOOL OR TRADITIONALS. THEY TOLDS ME THAT IF I DIDS, THEY WOULD TAKE AWAY MY BRAND NEW TWITTER HANDLE BALDWINJRNOLE AND MARK ALL MY INTERVIEWS AS SPAM. THAT SOUNDS SOOO GROSS I HATES PACKAGED MEAT! ANYWAYS, I HAVE A BERRY BERRY SPECIAL GUESS TODAY. HE IS A TALKING ORANGE!
Otto: Yeah, how we doin' there tawkin' bird man? My name is Otto, and I may look like a freaking smilin' orange, but if you disrespect me, I'll take that wing of yours and shove it straight up your—
Baldwin Jr.: AS WE WERE SAYING, WE IZ HEAR TO TALK ABOWT CAWLEDGE FOOSBALL! LET'S BEGINS. SEERACCUSE IS HAVING A TOUGH SEASON...
Otto: What are you sayin, you little punk bird? Don't you remember last year when Terell Hunt took that football and made your defense look like rotten gabagool?
Baldwin Jr.: OF COURSE I REMEMBERS. OUR POOR ANDRE WILLIAMS WAS PLAYING WITH A BROKEN DISLOCATED SHATTERED SHOULDER, AND CHASED RETTIG RAN THE BALL LIKE HE WAS DONOVAN MCNABB!
Otto: Hold on a second....Are you comparing Chase Rettig with Donovan McNabb?
Baldwin Jr.: NO OF COURSE I IZ NOT! THE ONLY THING IN COMMON BETWEEN CHASED AND DONOVAN IS THEIR SUPER BOWL WINS. THAT IS IT!
Otto: Oh look at you, you are some sort of comedian aren't you Baldwin, maybe the next time you want to make a joke you step over here and I'll make myself a late Thanksgiving roasted eagle. Capisce?
Baldwin Jr.: LIKE ALWAYS MY INTERVIEW HAS TAKEN A TURNS FOR THE WORSTED. MAYBE ONE MORE QUESTION. WHO WINS ON SATURDAYS?
Otto: Listen my fine plastic feathered friend. I'm sick of you, I'm sick of your school, and unless you want a free sizing of some cement shoes and a trip to the bottom of Lake Ontario, I'd scram!
Baldwin Jr: OH BOY FREE SHOES AND A FREE VACATION! I IZ SOOOOO EXCITED! GO EAGLEZ CAW CAW!!!!
Gametime Song Of The Week
If you don't like my song choice, here is a Youtube Playlist Of Roy Orbison
Nas: NY State Of Mind: Arguably one of the best hip hop albums of all time, the 1994 release Illmatic put Queensbridge rapper Nas on the map. The album is revolutionary as Nas spins tales of what it was like growing up in the projects, beautifully constructing rhymes some of which the music world had never heard. While the world was listening to Coolio, and Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg on the West Coast, Nas opened the door for New York hip hop. Before 1994, gangsta rap was mostly found on the West Coast, Nas opened the door for a whole new music scene that would eventually include Jay Z, Mobb Deep and to an extent Biggie. If you are a rap head, this is a must own album. It transcends time, the beats are fantastic, and takes you back to a time when rappers put effort into their music—none of this nonsense that 2Chainz, Drake and many of these current artists are throwing out there.
BCI Staff Predictions and GPS
Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, these predictions will be dribbling in slowly, make sure to check back often to see what the BCI writers are predicting...
Brian - Still in California, where hey at least it isn't snowing! 23-13 Boston College
Jeff - Again like Brian at least Jeff is down south where it currently is NOT snowing. 27-24 Boston College
A.J - One last home game, one last tailgate. One last opportunity to make it legendary. 27-10 Boston College (of course one missed extra point)
Grant - Mr. Salzano is back in Connecticut, currently creating a statue to Katie King Crowley out of turkey and hardened pumpkin filling. 23-13 Boston College
Joe - As always Mr. Grav will be at the game with AJ, trying desperately to explain to him the difference between the forecheck and backcheck.
Dan - Back from his honeymoon, Mr. Rubin is now officially neutered. He'll be back for the game as well, feel free to piss him off, he can't do anything about it anymore. 30-20 Boston College
The BC Interruption Prediction Game
Two more games remain and it's getting tight at the top. While all of us (minus Joe) picked FSU to win, none of us really picked the Noles to only win by 3. The closest was Dan Rubin the New Guy, who predicted 28-10. Grant has built a pretty solid lead, but Jeff is still in the race. Joe is mathematically eliminated from winning and NG is just about eliminated as well...
