Central Catholic (Clearwater, Florida) quarterback Jeff Smith is a dude! While listed as an athlete, all signs point to Steve Addazio utilizing him as a dual-threat quarterback. A three-star athlete from Florida, Smith selects the Eagles over claimed offers from Akron, Army and Wisconsin.
Must Reads
At the time of his commitment, Smith announced three finalists: Boston College, Iowa State and Wisconsin. Iowa State and Wisconsin appeared to be interested in utilizing Smith as a defensive back.
Smith will most likely be used by Boston College as a dual-threat quarterback, but given his speed, you never know. The coaches may consider switching him and utilizing his talents elsewhere on the football field. He looks to have good mechanics as a quarterback, and runs the option with precision. He has breakaway speed, and looks like he could develop into the mold of a playmaker for the Eagles.
If Steve Addazio and BC's next offensive coordinator want him at quarterback, Jeff Smith will most likely need some seasoning. He will be on campus this summer, but that puts him at a distinct disadvantage from guys like Troy Flutie, Darius Wade, and Elijah Robinson, all whom have had more time to study the playbook and practice with the team. However, Smith is the type of player that has tremendous upside and looks the perfect fit for Addazio's offensive scheme. We just won't know for another year or so, as I would expect that he will be redshirted in 2015.
