John Phillips Signs with Boston College, Faxes Letter of Intent

A big offensive lineman from upstate New York coming to the Heights.

An under-the-radar offensive lineman from upstate New York is an Eagle! Christian Brothers (Syracuse, N.Y.) offensive tackle John Phillips, who verbally committed to BC back in March, has signed on the dotted line. Boston College was his first and only claimed offer.

Phillips has the size that you would be looking for in an offensive tackle, and certainly looks to be a lot bigger than the 280 listed on the recruiting pages. He uses that size to push around defensive lineman, albeit they look a lot smaller than the guys he will be facing regularly at Boston College.

The 6-foot-6, 275 pounder appears to be a work in progress. There isn't a lot known about him on the recruiting sites, and he wasn't a guy that apparently got a lot of looks from other schools. Not sure if that was due to talent, where he was playing, or because he wanted to go to Boston College from the beginning. There are a few reasons I would expect him to redshirt, one most of Addazio's freshman linemen are usually redshirted unless they play in the spring. Secondly, I expect the speed of the game to be an adjustment to a guy who has spent his career playing defensive ends that appear to be much smaller than ACC DE's. Finally, there are other linemen on the roster who appear to be ready to play first.

Here are his highlights via Hudl:

Here is how Phillips rates according to the various recruiting services:

  • Rivals: Two stars, 10th best New York recruit
  • Scout: Two stars
  • 247Sports: Three stars, rated an 83, 70th best offensive lineman, 8th best New York recruit
  • ESPN: Three stars, rated a 74, 126th best offensive lineman, 7th best New York recruit

Go Eagles!
