Boston College Football Recruiting: DT Ray Smith Commits To Eagles

Dude number 20 is in the books. When will this torrid pace of commitments end?

Boston College received its fourth commitment in two days as San Diego defensive tackle Ray Smith committed to the Eagles on Thursday

This commitment shouldn't be much of a surprise for the Eagles as Smith had sounded very excited about the BC offer which he received last week. Currently the 6-2 270lbs Smith does not have a ranking, and held offers from San Diego State, Navy and Air Force.

Even without the big offers this recruitment is important for a myriad of reasons. First off, BC needed defensive tackles badly. Looking ahead BC is going to need to get at least one more, possibly two (could Christian Wilkins be this year's Jonathan Hilliman?), so getting one now to build depth was crucial. Smith has decent size for a high school junior, and weight is something he can put on when he gets to Boston. Hopefully in the next year or so he adds another inch or so of height as well. He's athletic, which appears to be the m.o. for Don Brown's defense, who wants speed and versatility from his defenders.

Secondly, believe it or not Smith is the first commitment from California for the BC program since 2010, when Spaz landed Chase Rettig. It's hard to believe that it took BC nearly half a decade to grab a recruit from a state that large that cranks out talent. Smith attends Cathedral Catholic in San Diego, and it would be a wise move for the Eagles to look to the large network of Catholic schools for future recruiting.
