Boston College Football Recruiting Updates: July 3, 2013

Updates from the recruiting trail.

Recruiting has slowed its "frenetic" pace recently, but that's to be expected with 20 recruits already in the 2014 class. Coach Addazio and the staff can now afford to pick and choose who they want to target for the few remaining scholarships in the class.

Here's an update on where Boston College stands. Big board is here.

-- BC lost out on Hunterdon Central (Flemington, NJ) linebacker Jason Cabinda, who committed to Syracuse over Boston College and Maryland, the other finalists for his services. With commitments from linebackers Connor Strachan (Needham, MA), Kevin Cohee (West Roxbury, MA), Christian Lezzer (Clearfield, PA) and Ty Schwab (Merritt Island, FL), it was unlikely that the Eagles would take a fifth LB in the class even if they end up moving a kid like Cohee to TE or DE.

-- Pope John XXIII tight end Ryan Izzo has narrowed his list of schools to six. Boston College did not make the cut.

This shouldn't come as that big of a surprise considering the Eagles just landed a commitment from Don Bosco TE Tom Sweeney. I doubt that BC takes another tight end in the class unless the program can land Elder's Devin Pike out of Cincinnati. Pike is down to BC, Illinois, Louisville and Virginia.

-- The nation's no. 2 dual threat QB, D.J. Gillins (Jean Ribault, Jacksonville, Florida), will announce his decision this Monday at 5:30 on ESPN Radio's Three And Out (out of Georgia).

Gillins is down to five finalists, alphabetically -- Arizona, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin. 247Sports Crystal Ball is predicting Gillins to BC, but Wisconsin, which isn't yet represented in the Crystal Ball predictions, seems to be gaining on the Eagles.

-- Another BC quarterback target, Hollywood, Florida's Sean White, is predicted to land in Madison. Will be interesting to see how, if at all, this impacts Gillins' decision.

-- The staff's efforts to bring a second running back into the fold to complement Norwich Free Academy's Marcus Outlow seem to be focused on Detroit Country Day's RB Richard Wilson. BC's other major RB target, St. Thomas Aquinas' Madre London, is predicted to head to Nebraska.

-- Defensive tackle is one of the major needs yet to be filled in this class. The prospects are few and far between. Hampton, Virginia DT Ricky Walker appears to be down to either Penn State or Virginia Tech. BC is the only major offer right now for Rock Hill, SC DT Zeek Rodney, but if in-state Clemson or South Carolina jump in, it will be very difficult to pull Rodney out of the Palmetto State.
