Boston College Football Recruiting: DE Joel Rich Commits To The Eagles

A look at a 2013 BC commit defensive end Joel Rich

Joel Rich

Hometown: Minerva, Ohio
High School: St. Thomas Aquinas
Position: Defensive End/Tight End
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 230 lbs
40: n/a

Rankings: Rivals 3* (position NR), Scout 2* (position 115), ESPN 2* (rated a 68, 128 position, 99 state), 247 Sports 2* (rated a 78, position 95, state 99). Selected Boston College over Buffalo. Recruited by Sean Devine.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Watching his video, Rich showcases both his offensive and defensive skills. On the offensive side of the ball he is very quick as a tight end, causing all sorts of matchup problems against much slower linebackers that are asked to cover him. Good hand, and very quick. On the defensive side of the ball, he is a sure tackler and looks like he doesn't give up on plays.

Realistic Outlook: Interesting recruit, because he was recruited as a defensive end, but watching his highlights he looks like a better fit on offense. He is a little undersized and slow to start on the line this year, but his offensive skills are intriguing, especially since Steve Addazio didn't recruit a tight end this year. If Addazio wants to go with a bulky run blocking tight end, Rich is not a fit, but if he wants to go with an Aaron Hernandez lite, maybe he would like to try Rich on the offensive side of the ball.
