In what was one of the most disappointing outings of the year, Boston College was completely dismantled by Larry Fedora's UNC squad Saturday afternoon. On the opening drive of the game BC started making plays including a nice catch and run by H-back Mike Naples. However on the next play, quarterback Chase Rettig missed a handoff to Andre Williams which ended up on the ground and recovered by Tar Heel linebacker Jeff Schoettmer. Five plays later and Bryn Renner hit Ryan Switzer for a touchdown pass.
Andre Williams answered two drives with a 55 yard run of his own, but after that it was all down hill for the Eagles. To end the first quarter UNC went on a 15 play drive that ended with A.J. Blue driving in the second UNC TD. BC's offense continued to sputter, and the Heels capitalized when Renner hit Bug Howard on a swing pass that gave the Tar Heels a 13 point lead. Safety Sean Sylvia was ejected from the game after he was called for a targeting penalty. It was a questionable call, but we will get more into that tomorrow in the Good, Bad and Ugly post.
The story of the day was BC's inability to get anything going on offense. Chase Rettig was sacked four times, held on to the ball too long and made a series of bad throws that prevented the Eagles' offense from moving the ball. This allowed the Tar Heels D to stack the box, stifle Williams, while the Tar Heel offense badgered a beleaguered defense that had to spend quite a bit of time on the field. Marquise Williams hit Bug Howard with a touchdown pass, and ran another one in in the fourth quarter. And that was all she wrote.
BC continues to struggle on the road and is now up to nine straight losses on the road. The Eagles' last road victory remains a 2011 win over Miami, just days after they found out the Canes were going to be bowl ineligible. Next weekend the Eagles will get the staunch defense of the Hokies, and the biggest worry on everyone's mind has to be the struggles of senior QB Chase Rettig. Does Addazio continue to let him flounder, or does he give someone else a try?
