Steve Addazio opening statement...
Well obviously it was a defensive game. They had 217 yards total offense. We had 195. There's about three things in there that are striking to me. We uncharacteristically had two turnovers. We had six penalties for 66 yards. That's not who we are. They had zero turnovers and four penalties for 26 yards. The game should have been a seven-point game in the fourth quarter with an opportunity in the fourth quarter to win the game. We, uncharacteristically amongst a lot of things that were going on in that game, we turned that ball over- unnecessarily in the fourth quarter to make that a 14-point game. That's upsetting to me.
I felt in the second half that we would come out and I thought we would play a pretty good second half. That was what I thought and we played from the five, from the 10, from the 20, from the 15. We've got to get better field position out of our punt return team. That didn't happen. We were on the long field. Darius Wade got hurt. We fumbled the ball. We had a couple of critical penalties that put us behind the chains down and distance. That's where it is.
I felt like in the second half we needed to have great field position and get some momentum because there was some plays to be made. We were starting to get a few bubbles of something getting going and every time there was either a penalty or there was something going on. We are not good enough against that kind of team to go 90 yards.
We played a good football team. Again, 217 total offense for Florida State and 195 for Boston College. Two turnovers for BC. Six penalties for 66 yards for BC. The game should be a 7-0 game in the fourth quarter with a chance to win it and we didn't get that done. We didn't allow that to happen. That's bothering me.
Our team is a tough football team. Tough. We played hard. We played physical. We played tough. That happened on the field today. I don't sugar coat anything with anybody. We played hard. We played physical. We played tough. It's just a shame that we had to put the ball on the ground in the second half for no reason. With that kind of physicality, with that kind of grit and that kind of toughness there will be a lot of opportunities for us. We have to grow up. We've got to mature. We've got to be able to make the plays that are available to us. We didn't do that today offensively. There were some plays available and we didn't make them. The Boston College football team played really, really hard today and you can grow off of that. That's your foundation. Now take that and grow from that. Take that and move and grow.
Senior DB Justin Simmons on the overall play of the defense...
I thought as a defense our resolve after that first drive was great. Looking at it now, there are some plays that should have been made to give our offense better field position. I'm very happy with the way we played. I thought we did a good job stopping the run. But at the end of the day, we didn't win the game, so there were plays that we should have made that could have put us in better position to score touchdowns.
Simmons on seeing Welles Crowther's parents out on the field...
I saw them around. Being there last year [during the first red bandana game] and then seeing them there today, it just makes you want to play harder. It's bigger than Boston College, it's bigger than yourself and it's bigger than your team. So seeing them it gives me that extra boost whenever my body is tired and I'm mentally fatigued.
Sophomore DL Harold Landry on the missed safety...
There were too many missed opportunities on the field, and [the missed safety] was the biggest one of the game to me. I tried to tackle him with the wrong shoulder, and should have hit him with the other end. It can't happen. That could have changed momentum of the game.
Landry on the resolve of the defense...
We came hard. I think we have one of the best front sevens in the country. At end of the day, it didn't matter because we took a loss. But I think our front seven was amazing, but you have to take advantage of the opportunities you have on the field. You can't miss them against a team like Florida State.
Senior OL Dave Bowen on the physicality in the trenches...
Hats off to Florida State. They have a great front seven on defense. I thought we fought hard up front, but I think we have to be better on execution, obviously. That's something we need to attack when we watch the film and get ready to improve this week.
Bowen on playing as a team...
Our defense played great tonight and we've got to help them out. The defense can't win us a game, the offense can't win us a game, special teams can't win us a game; it's a team game. So we have to build off their energy and do a better job.
Sophomore RB Jon Hilliman on his fumble...
There was a lack of fundamentals, a lack of ball security. The ball was swinging and he popped it out. Hats off to the linebacker and the guy who picked it up. I just have to focus on practice and block out the noise and focus on the fundamentals and go back to square one.
