Changes on Defense ($$$)
At Tuesday's media day, Steve Addazio went out of his way to say how important it is for the BC defense to improve this year. "There's no misunderstanding it with this whole football team----If you don't play great defense you aren't going to win," said Addazio. Both Addazio and defensive coordinator Don Brown know full well that they are inheriting a defense that was 100th nationally in total defense (456 ypg) and 74th nationally in scoring defense, allowing a little shy of 30 ppg. To try and improve the unit the staff is implementing a defense that will show opposing offenses multiple different looks. With that will come multiple different blitz packages.
BC quarterback Chase Rettig gets familiar face with Ryan Day’s return - College football - Boston.com
Boston College middle linebacker Steele Divitto, quarterback of the Eagles’ defense, said he could not fathom going through as many coordinators as senior quarterback Chase Rettig, who has had to acquaint himself with four over his last 3½ seasons at the helm of BC’s offense. Rettig started with Gary Tranquill as a true freshman. Tranquill was supplanted Rettig’s sophomore season by Kevin Rogers, who was replaced in mid-season by Dave Brock. Doug Martin then entered the picture as OC in Rettig’s junior season. Now, Rettig is on his fifth coordinator with Ryan Day, who is on his third tour of duty at The Heights after serving as an offensive graduate assistant (2003-04 ) under Tom O’Brien then as a receivers coach (2007-11) under Frank Spaziani.
Josh Bordner, Mike Marscovetra in running for BC backup quarterback job - College football - Boston.com
Boston College football coach Steve Addazio said depth — or lack thereof — at key positions would be a pressing concern in his first preseason camp with the Eagles. One area of immediate concern would be finding a backup to starting quarterback Chase Rettig. Addazio didn’t mince any words when he spelled out what he would be looking for in the battle between junior Josh Bordner and senior Mike Marscovetra. "Productivity in camp,’’ Addazio said Tuesday at BC’s Media Day. "We’ll get in those competitive situations, but either you move the team or you don’t. I’m glad if you complete 92 percent in seven-on-seven, but I really don’t care about seven-on-seven. I want to see how you move the team when you’re getting hit.’’
