Better Know A Dude 2015: #42 Kicker/Punter Alex Howell

New, 2 comments

BC struggled on special teams in 2014, will Howell help them fix that this year?

Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Alex Howell

Position:K/P

Number: #42

Year: Senior

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 214 lbs.

Hometown: Florence, SC

High School: West Florence HS

2013 Stats: Played in the Independence Bowl Game against Arizona, where he had one kickoff that went for 63 yards. He also played in one game in 2012 as well.

2014 Stats: As a punter he hit 65 punts totaling 2,764 yards ... averaged 42.5 yards per punt, 6th in the ACC. His longest punt was 62 yards against Pittsburgh. He also was the "long" field goal kicker in 2014, connecting on 5 of 10 field goals, and 8 of 9 extra points, which he later ceded to Mike Knoll.

2015 Projections: He is definitely going to be the starting punter coming out of the gate, he has earned it. BC has two kickers (Howell and Knoll) that could battle for the starting kicking job, or if Addazio wants he can do that rotating scenario that he had going last year. I have to imagine he will go with the hot foot, and just for stability sake let's hope that Knoll is the kicker and Howell is the punter in 2015.

How'd He Get Here: Alex was a 2* out of Florence, SC that at the time was the 10th ranked kicker in the country. He did not have any other offers at the time, and was recruited by Mike Dawson.

Addazio on Howell: "He's got some length and he's done well in camp,'' Addazio said of Howell. "But in somewhat competitive situations here, we've got to get his accuracy up, because that's when it matters. He'd done a good job kicking off, his punts have been pretty good, but his accuracy in competitive situations has got to be better.''

Twitter Feed: Nope

Tweetables: Even though Alex doesn't have Twitter here he is, chilling on the beach with Nate Freese and their kicking coach

Uniform History: The first known player to wear #42 for BC was guard John Maloney in 1914.  Other than that there really wasn't a lot of successful Eagles who have worn the number. Justice Smith wore the number in the 90's on his way to rushing for 1,300 yards in his career. CB Isaac Johnson wore the number in 2008 & 2009. Cornerback E.J. Fortenberry will be wearing #42 as well this year.
