2014 Stats: Redshirted.
2015 Projections: This could be Sweeney's year to get some looks with the offense. He is a pass catching tight end with serviceable hands, which gives him a dimension that Louie Addazio and Mike Giacone don't have. Depending on how Addazio trusts his offensive line, he may try to spring some tight ends on passing downs, kind of like what he did with C.J. Parsons in 2013. If that's the case Sweeney certainly may see some reps. But then again if the line struggles, Addazio and Justin Frye may choose to go more with the overloaded look, and give more reps to the blocking tight ends.
How'd He Get Here: A two star tight end from New Jersey, Tom chose Boston College as his only offer. He also had interest from Rutgers and the University of Miami.
On Why He Chose Boston College: "I chose Boston College is because you get the combination of an unbelievable academic school and an unbelievable athletic school," Sweeney said. "We have a pretty good class coming in and the chance to play early and turn things around, make our way up in the ACC and hopefully win the ACC in our next four years. You just can't go wrong with Boston College."
Uniform History: The number #89 has only had a few players wear it for Boston College. The first player to wear it was William McKenney, a center, who wore it 1961. Jim King, a defensive end, wore it in the 60's as well. Todd Pollack, and Chris Leber, both tight ends, wore it in the 70's. Mark Chmura, a star tight end for the Eagles, wore it in the 90's while Sean Ryan, a defensive end, wore it in the early 2000's.
