The Book - Week 2 - September 6, 2014

BC rises slightly in ACC and Nationally. Eagles a 4 point dog vs Pitt.

Georgia freaks out Clemson, rises in Book poll
Georgia freaks out Clemson, rises in Book poll

Week 2 of the season and in our poll, Florida State continues to sit in the top spot.  The Noles slipped by Oklahoma State 37-31 on Saturday night at Jerry's World and have now been the #1 team in the Book poll for nine straight weeks, stretching back November 2 of 2013 when Alabama sat at number one.

BCs win over UMass elevated the Eagles to number 72 in the country, up from 80 and number 11 in the ACC (up from 14 last week).  BC is 71 in the Sagarin poll and 65 in the combined Massey poll this week, so our poll is definitely in the range.  As mentioned, I now am running a BETA of a second poll, further accentuating strength of schedule into the numbers and based on that, BC sits at 71. So far the stars align!

There are a few slots here that might make you shake your head.  Baylor at #3, Ole Miss at #4 and Oregon down at #8 stick out immediately.

Week one to me, only proved one thing and that is that there doesn't appear to be a true dominant team at this point, although obviously there is still the belief that FSU is one and that perhaps outside of the Noles, the ACC may be in a down period.  There is a clear and precipitous drop after them down to North Carolina and Louisville.  Seems like there may be some good teams, but no one outside of Florida State in the elite class this year.

The BC-Pitt game that we have all been pointing to as perhaps the defining game of the 2014 season finds the Panthers 4 point favorites.  Most of the spreads I have seen so far have Pitt by 4.5, so very comparable there too.  Two of the games of major national interest this week find BC's next opponent, USC, a 4 point dog at Stanford and Oregon just a 5.5 point favorite at home against Michigan State.

The Book got off to a typical sluggish start going 17-20 .459 against the spread, seemingly always starting below .500 before taking off after a few weeks.

Once again, the Massey ratings are the combined 39 computer poll rankings, listed on the Massey ratings site for the national rankings and the ACC National Ranking is the Book national ranking out of 128 teams.
