The Boston College field hockey team fired a warning shot to other teams in their path this year over the weekend, topping two ranked Big Ten teams to sweep the ACC-Big Ten Cup.
The #12-ranked Eagles finished off their perfect weekend with a 2-1 victory over #6 Maryland on Sunday. The win improved BC to 4-0 on the season.
Freshmen Caroline McGovern and Fusine Govaert gave Boston College a 2-0 lead, then BC held off against a Maryland surge to hang on for the low-scoring victory. In the second half, the Terrapins outshot BC 11-3 and earned 6 penalty corners, but could only draw within one.
It was BC's third straight narrow victory over a ranked team, as they won yet another double overtime contest on Friday night in the tournament opener against #14 Northwestern. BC twice battled back from one-goal deficits to tie the game, then emerged victorious on Lucy Lytle's sudden death winner at 85:35.
The successful weekend is likely to see BC land in the top 10 in the national rankings prior to Friday night’s titanic battle with #5 Syracuse - BC’s first step in what is, as always, a brutally difficult ACC schedule. With the win over Maryland in the books, BC will feel confident they can run with anyone.
