#12 Boston College field hockey had a tricky task on Sunday, traveling to #18 Albany.
BC responded to the challenge in dramatic fashion, with freshman Caroline McGovern scoring a double overtime winner to give the Eagles a thrilling 2-1 win.
Lucy Lytle scored an early goal to give the Eagles a lead in the sixth minute of play, making it seem as though a repeat of the rout over Quinnipiac may be forthcoming. But Albany fought back, with Katie MacCallum scoring the tying goal in the 25th minute.
BC pounded on the Albany door throughout the second half and OT, putting 7 shots on net to Albany's 1 during that stretch, but UA goalkeeper Melissa Nealon stood her ground and kept things going deep, deep into the match. BC even had a penalty shot opportunity in the 91st minute, but Nealon made the save.
McGovern’s breakthrough a minute later gave BC the huge victory - one they’ll be glad to have in their back pockets, with two extremely difficult matchups forthcoming. Next weekend, BC participates in the ACC/B1G challenge, facing off against #14 Northwestern on Friday, and #6 Maryland on Sunday.
We'll know a lot more about how BC matches up against some of the nation's best one week from today - but for now, they'll be happy with their 2-0 start.
