This week, Head Coach Katie Crowley announced the captains for the upcoming 2020-2021 Boston College Women’s Hockey season that will hopefully take place. Defender Cayla Barnes, as well as forwards Maegan Beres and Kelly Browne, will serve as tri-captains for the upcoming season, we hope. The team’s captains are chosen by a team vote.

Maegan Beres is the lone senior of the group. She’s played in all 133 games in her BC career and has earned a reputation as a gritty, fearless two-way player. She led Hockey East forwards in blocked shots last season and earned the respect of her teammates in the locker room pretty early on in her BC career.
Cayla Barnes is the most famous name on the team as the remaining gold medalist on the roster from the PyeongChang Olympics, and she still has two years of eligibility remaining. She’s the defender of the group, and led all Hockey East players with 103 blocked shots this year (good for 3rd in the country), but is known for generating a lot of the Eagle offense from the blue line as well. She’s got a ton of leadership experience under her belt already, having captained the USA U18 team to a gold medal and having twice served as captain for the USA U22 team as well.
Kelly Browne rounds out the group and further solidifies the group’s theme of being known as two-way players. The center has long been one of BC’s best all-around forwards, known not just for her scoring ability (second on the team in scoring this past season) but also for... well, just about everything else too. She’s known as one of the most responsible defensive forwards on the team while still putting up strong offensive numbers, she was the top scorer on the team’s power play unit, she doesn’t take penalties, she anchors the PK, and she somehow took a whopping 42% of the team’s faceoffs this season. She does it all, and has clearly earned the respect of her teammates to be named a captain as a junior.
All in all, it’s a strong group of players selected as captains for the hopefully-still-happening upcoming season. Congratulations to Maegan, Cayla, and Kelly!
