#3 Northeastern continued to show why they are a national championship contender this weekend as they completed a sweep of the season series against Boston College. The Eagles fell by a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, giving Northeastern an aggregate 12-0 win on the season series against the Eagles. Yikes.
Northeastern took a lead early on in this one, scoring just 75 seconds into the game and catching BC sleeping. But the good news was that the Eagles responded well for the rest of the opening period, outshooting NU 12-6 in the opening 20 minutes and earning a few power play opportunities. But Northeastern’s Team USA goaltender Aerin Frankel continued to stymie BC, and the Eagles couldn’t find an equalizer.
It was BC’s turn to take a wave of penalties in the second period, as they took four straight throughtout the second half of the second middle frame and put up a good fight to keep the deficit at one. But unfortunately, the final penalty that carried over into the third period proved to be the one that sank the Eagles, as Northeastern scored the power play tally just ten seconds into the third period to really put BC into a hole.
Northeastern scored on another power play a few minutes later to make it 3-0, and that was all she wrote as the Eagles couldn’t solve Frankel and their frustration began to show. The loss drops BC to a six game losing streak and 1-8-1 in their last ten.
The good news is that the Eagles are finally out from a brutal stretch of games against some of the nation’s top teams. BC’s last seven games were against teams in the top ten, including four against teams in the top three, and while they couldn’t pull out a win in any of those games, they did tie #1 Minnesota at the beginning of the stretch.
BC will now get five games against teams in the bottom half of the Hockey East standings — including four at home — for a real opportunity to turn things around and hopefully just get right mentally. The Eagles clearly started to get frustrated, and getting a few wins under their belt could get them some momentum heading into the Beanpot.
BC will host Vermont for two games at Conte Forum on Friday and Saturday afternoon next weekend.
