Meet The Eagles, BC Men’s Hockey Edition: Julius Mattila

Get to know #26

John Quackenbos, BC Athletics

Do you know Finnish? Well you should! Because Boston College Hockey is starting to become the destination for top Finnish hockey players.

Name: Julius Mattila

Number: 26

Position: Forward

Class Year: Sophomore

Background: Julius Mattila had a really nice freshman season, posting an 8-8—16 line in only 30 games and tallying the 2nd most goals among freshmen, after David Cotton. Interestingly, he also had the Eagles’ fewest penalty minutes among regular players, and kept it clean with 0 PIM in league play. Given BC’s struggles on special teams last year, that was much appreciated.

2017-18 Outlook: Despite coming in second to David Cotton among freshmen in most team statistics, on a per-game basis, Mattila and Cotton were both pretty even, thanks to Mattila missing ten games — a full quarter of the season. I really like Mattila to be a top two line player in 2017-2018 and beyond. He’s the prototype for what kind of player BC should be recruiting: someone who is going to provide quality production over the course of 4 years.

Fun Fact: “Turvallisuuskoulu” is how you say “Safety School” in Finnish
