Last week: Defeated Wisconsin (80-70)
This week: Idle
Last week's ranking: 1 (--)
It was far from a banner week for the ACC, but the class of the conference so far this year took care of business in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, downing Wisconsin 80-70. The Blue Devils have the week off before returning to action next Monday with a home game against Elon.
2. Virginia Cavaliers (9-0, 0-0)
Last week: Defeated Maryland (76-65), Defeated VCU (74-57)
This week: Idle
Last week's ranking: 3 (up 1)
The Cavaliers notched one of the conference's other big wins in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, taking care of former conference rival Maryland, 76-65. Virginia followed that up with a convincing victory over Shaka Smart's VCU Rams.
3. Louisville Cardinals (7-0, 0-0)
Last week: Defeated Ohio State (64-55), Defeated FIU (82-57)
This week: Indiana (12/9), UNC-Wilmington (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 2 (down 1)
The Cards are down one spot this week, though prob less for what UVA did and less what Louisville did. Louisville is the proud owner of one of the ACC's signature wins in the ACC/Big Ten Challenging, racing out to a big first half lead and holding off Ohio State 64-55. A blowout victory over FIU capped another perfect week for the Fighting Pitinos.
4. North Carolina Tar Heels (6-2, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Iowa (60-55), Defeated East Carolina (108-64)
This week: @ Kentucky (12/13)
Last week's ranking: 4 (--)
The Heels hold firm at #4 this week despite dropping a home loss to Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Roy Williams' boys rebounded with a huge 108-64 victory over ECU. This week, UNC travels to Kentucky in a marquee matchup with the top ranked team in the nation.
5. Miami Hurricanes (8-1, 0-0)
Last week: Defeated Illinois (70-61), Lost to Green Bay (68-55)
This week: Savannah State (12/8)
Last week's ranking: 5 (--)
Miami knocked off Illinois, 70-61, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge to remain unbeaten, but was handed its first loss of the year at home to the Green Bay Phoenix on Saturday. Just one game for the U this week, when the Hurricanes host visiting Savannah State tonight.
6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1, 0-0)
Last week: Defeated Michigan State (79-78 OT), Defeated Fairleigh Dickinson (75-57)
This week: Mount St. Mary's (12/9), Florida State (12/13)
Last week's ranking: 7 (up 1)
The Irish are up 1 spot this week with a perfect 2-0 mark on the week. Notre Dame nearly gave its ACC/Big Ten Challenge game away to Michigan State before prevailing in overtime over Sparty. The week was capped with a 75-57 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Two games this week for ND, both home games. First up is a home date with Mount St. Mary's before the Irish's ACC opener against Florida State.
7. North Carolina State Wolfpack (7-1, 1-0)
Last week: Lost to Purdue (66-61), Defeated Wake Forest (78-65)
This week: Charleston Southern (12/12), Wofford (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 8 (up 1)
The Pack fell to Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge but are off to a 1-0 start to conference play with a 78-65 victory over Wake Forest in the ACC opener. Ralston Turner turned it on in the second half and finished with 21 points to pace the Wolfpack. It's back to non-conference play for N.C. State this week, which hosts Charleston Southern and Wofford at home.
8. Syracuse Orange (5-3, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Michigan (68-65), Lost to St. John's (69-57)
This week: Louisiana Tech (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 6 (down 2)
The Orange are down two spots this week after dropping a pair of games to Michigan (68-65) and St. John's (69-57) to fall to 5-3 on the year. St. John's Phil Greene IV spoiled a solid performance from SU's Rakeem Christmas—15 points, 15 rebounds for his second double-double of the year—scoring 11 straight points to break up a tight game in the second half. Syracuse is off until next Sunday, when they'll host Louisiana Tech.
9. Pittsburgh Panthers (5-3, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Indiana (81-69), Defeated Duquesne (76-62)
This week: St. Bonaventure (12/13)
Last week's ranking: 9 (--)
The up and down season for Pitt continues. A miserable shooting performance from the perimeter (7-of-26 on 3-pointers) and a sluggish performance from their bigs contributed to a 81-69 loss to Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Pitt would rebound with a 76-62 victory over Duquesne in the 83rd City Game last Friday night. Pitt hosts the Bonnies on Saturday.
10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-2, 0-0)
Last week: Defeated Northwestern (66-58), Lost to South Carolina-Upstate (59-54)
This week: Idle
Last week's ranking: 10 (--)
After notching a 66-58 victory over Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Jackets followed that up with a 59-54 loss to South Carolina-Upstate. No, not South Carolina. South Carolina-Upstate. Still a loss to NOT the University of South Carolina (at Columbia) wasn't enough to knock Georgia Tech from it's #10 spot in the rankings.
11t. Boston College Eagles (4-3, 0-0)
Last week: Defeated Marist (79-61), Defeated Providence (69-60)
This week: Maine (12/11), Binghamton (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 13 (up 2)
The basketball dudes are up 2 spots this week with victories over Marist and Providence. Boston College will look to keep things rolling this week with home games over America East teams Maine and Binghamton.
11t. Clemson Tigers (5-3, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Rutgers (69-64), Defeated Arkansas (68-65 OT)
This week: Auburn (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 12 (up 1)
Clemson is yet another confounding ACC program. The Tigers are capable of knocking off a ranked Arkansas team, yet dropped their ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup to...Rutgers? Seriously?
13. Florida State Seminoles (4-4, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Nebraska (70-65), Defeated Central Florida (96-73)
This week: @ Notre Dame (12/13)
Last week's ranking: 11 (down 2)
Florida State continues to tumble down the rankings, checking in at #13 this week after a 70-65 loss to Nebraska in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The 'Noles rebounded with a big 96-73 victory over UCF over the weekend. Florida State has the week off this week ahead of Saturday's trip to South Bend for FSU's ACC season opener.
14. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (4-5, 0-1)
Last week: Lost to Minnesota (84-69), Lost to N.C. State (78-65)
This week: Samford (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 14t (--)
Danny Manning's Demon Deacons dropped a pair of games last week—to Minnesota in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and to N.C. State in the ACC opener. Wake will be looking to snap a three-game skid this week when they welcome the Samford Bulldogs to Lawrence Joel Coliseum on Sunday.
15. Virginia Tech Hokies (4-4, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Penn State (61-58), Lost to Radford (68-66)
This week: Alabama A&M (12/14)
Last week's ranking: 14t (down 1)
The Hokies round off this week's power rankings. Like Wake, Virginia Tech went 0-2 this week with losses to Penn State and Radford. Don't forget to box out, Hokies.
